8—THE BRUSSELS ROST, MAY 4, 1977
Historical Society recalls statistician Winghpm Memorial Shop
The Huron County Historical.
Society met in the Council
Chamber, Clinton, Tuesday,
April 19 at 8 p.m. with a good
attendance. Mr. David McClure,
president, being ill, the meeting
was chaired by Mr. Joseph Hogan
of Exeter.
The minutes of the previous
meeting were read by Mrs. Doris
Batkin, secretary-treasurer. The
financial report was also given
and approved.
After a short business session,
Mrs. Charles Nelson read a paper
on the life of the late Dr. Robert
Coats, Dominion statistician for
some years. He was the son of
Robert Coats of the famous
thread-making family of Paisley,
Scotland.* lived for some years
as a young child in Goderich
township in the house now owned
by Miss Isabelle Fraser.
He was the recipient of many
honours during his long service to
, Canada. Not the least was the
unveiling of a plaque to his
memory Sept. 18, 1976 at
Clinton .•
Two, very enjoyable musical
numbers were given by Mr.
Wilfred Jervis and Mr. Watt
Webster, the latter on the
harmonica and Mr. J ervis on the
"bones".
Mrs. Doris Batkin then gave an
interesting and hilarious talk on
Clinton in bygone days, its
characters, its happenings and
curious names of various sections
of the town. To name a few these
latter are Vinegar Hill, Devil's
half acre, Little England, etc.
Mrs. Omber Papp thanked all
who had made the evening so
enjoyable. Mrs. Lois Elliott,
president of Cli nton Women's
Institute who had welcomed all
present, then invited everyone to
remain for luncheon served by the
ladies of the Institute. A pleasant
half hour was spent over tea and
sandwiches.
Windsor University
choir enjoyed at
Huronview
The Clinton Christian Reformed Choir provided special
musical numbers for the Sunday evening Song Service. The
service was led by Dick Roorda. Al DeHaun directed and
accompanied the thirty-five voice choir. The residents look
forward to this yearly visit by the choir and enjoyed it very
much.
Marie Flynn and Norman Speir entertained on Monday
afternoon with Old Tyme Music for the dancing and led the
sing-a-long of favorite songs. The Christian Reformed
volunteers assisted with the activities.
The University of Windsor school of music presented the
Chamber hour for the Family night program. The
twenty-voice choir along with the Conductor, Richard
Householder, are touring Western Ontario this week and we
appreciate that Huronview was included in their itinerary.
The concert included several numbers by the chorus and a
quartette number by Marg Morgan, Gail Stoneman, Vicki
Godden and Ian Lestein. Mrs. Margaret Murray thanked all
those responsible for the hour of fine music on behalf of the
residents.
