Much of the necessary planning undertaken by various local committees is well in hand'. However, an important contest to run in conjunction with the match is of interest to many farm and homeowners as well. The. Farmstead and Home Improvement Competition is a project which requires immediate attention from all those who intend to enter. Prizes will be offered for the most improved and/or most attractive properties not only in the farming community but in the county's towns and villages as well. Those who have not yet received entry and application forms- may pick them up at the offices of the clerks of the municipalities in which they reside. Here are a few hints which will provide a guide to participation in the competition. Dismantle and remove old buildings that are beyond, repair; remove trash, useless machinery and old vehicles; repair or remove old or broken-down fences. Application of paint to the house, farm buildings, mailbox, fences and related structures adds much to general appearance. Display of the property owner's name in a prominent location is desirable. Road entrance and driveway must not be neglected. Attractive entrances are important as a general first impression. New plantings or improving the condition of the shrubbery, trees, flowerbeds and ' lawns will enhance the overall appearance. Rules of Competition Open to residents within the boundaries of Huron County. Each participant to enter in one class only. Farmsteads must be owner- operated with a minimum of five acres in size. In this Compettion, a Campbell of R.R. 5, Kincardine weighing 940 lbs. topped the • market at 41.50 with his 22 heifers averaging 817 lbs. selling for 39.20. Four heifers consigned by Glen Johnston of Bluevale averaging 988 lbs. sold for 41.30. Six heifers consigned by Ross Durnin of Lucknow; averaging 988 lbs. sold for 41.30. Six heifers consigned by Bill Shortreed of Walton averaging 1017 lbs. sold for 40.80. Choice Cows - 29.00 to 31.00 with sales to 32.75. Good Cows 27.00 to 29.00. Bulls traded to 35.00 with a fancy Charlois bull consigned by Gary Rintoul- of Lucknow weighing 1250 lbs. selling for 40.00. 30 to 40 lb. pigs -traded to a high of 39.50. 40 to 50 lb. pigs to a high of 48.75. 50 to 60 lb. pigs to a high of 50.50. 60 to 70 lb. pigs to a high of 53.50. • Brussels Stockyards are hold- ing their first Spring Stocker and Feeder Sale on Tuesday, May 3 at 1 p.m. Farmstead is defined as that part of the farm comprising the buildings, the entrance and the immediate surrounding land. Closing Dates, for entries in Classes 1, 2 and 3 - June 1st, 1977. These classes will be p rejudged as soon as possible 'following this date. These classes. include improvements made after July 1st, 1977, and up to August 1st, 1978. An itemized lists of improvements made during this period should be submitted to the Judge at the time of his visit. Entries for Classes 4 and 5 must be in by June 1st, 1978. The entry fee is $5.00 payable with the application to the Secretary, Jim Morlock, Crediton. • Since thousands of visitors will be driving the roads and streets of Huron at plowing match time no effort should be spared to let them see that the people of Huron are proud of a progressive County, Market active on Friday r.
