Bluevale U CW heats.,
about life in Zaire
Correspondent
Mrs, Joe Walker
357-3558
Life, as seen through the eyes
of, and as experienced through
three years of living in the city of
Kananga in Zaire, Africa, was
interestingly depicted by teacher-
missionary Miss Mary Mae
Schwarzentruber, attractively
garbed in Zaire attire, as she
spoke to the Spring Thankoffering
meeting of the W.M.S. of
Bluevale Presbyterian Church.
The use of excellent slides,
accompanied by a delightful tinge
of humour in the entertaining
commentary, along with the
personal charm and grace of this
speaker, held the assembled
audience fascinated as she told of
the climate of this area, right on
the equator, the great copper
wealth, of the country, military
disorders and problems resulting
from lack of fuel, along with
difficulty in obtaining parts for
repairing machines and planes.
Social rank is evident in •Zaire.
White people are in the top class
along With the educated and
well-to-do. A priviledged class of
about two hundred families rules
Zaire. Homes range from the one
-roomed, homemade, sticks and
grass huts to the convent ional
western st yle with tin roofs.
Living to eat must not be a
meaningful maxim in that land,
for what could be less appetizing
than a continuous menu of goo
made from the roots of the manico
plant, and no meat?
How would you like to get your
supply of protein from grabbing
handfuls of termites they
flock around a bright light, and
cramming them into your mouth
-- just to blow out the wings?
What a treat the g -orgeous
melons and bananas must be!
Captivating indeed were the
intricate hair-do's adorning the
heads of the teenage girls shown
in some of the slides. How
miniscule the braids either lying
flat, coiled high, or sticking out all
over like tufted spikes.
And Zaire is not without its
beauty as we saw gorgeous
sceneries with elegant lighting
glowing through the bush growth
of shrubs, trees and flowers and
meagre gardening attempts.
Mrs. Wayne Baswick presided
for this meeting opening it with
'call to worship, hymn 582 and
extending words of welcome to
visitors from Gorrie and
Molesworth Presbyterian
Churches, also Bluevale United
Church.
David and Dwayne Golley
delightfully entertained the
audience with two musical
selections on guitar and
accordion.
Scripture, comments and
prayer ably conducted by Mrs.
Glen Golley and based on
Hebrews 9:28 drove home the
awful truth that we misinterpret
the meaning of Easter with all our
thoughts of new clothes, current
styles etc. instead of
concentrating on the resurrection
of the Christ and His promise of

about. Mrs. Jack Shaw presented

new life. We must go and tell, be
