Seatbelts can
save lives
(By Const. R. W.Wilson)
A 30 m.p.h. ollision can be a
serious collision. (This is one
vehicle at 30 m.p.h. striking a
stationary object. If this 30 m.p.h.
vehicle strikes another 30 m.p.h.
vehicle headon, the impace is a 60
m.p.h. impact.) Yes, an impact of
a 30 m.p.h. vehicle can cause its'
occupants, if unbelted, to go
slamming against the steering
wheel, dash board and
windshield,causing serious injury
and even fatalities. Fatalities in
vehicles have been recorded at
speeds as low as- 12 m.p.h.
Seat belts restrain bodies from
being slammed against the
interior of vehicles.
In the first nine months of
mar. ditory seatbelt law,
808 drivers and passengers were
killed in traffic accidents - a
decrease of 14% from 937 killed
in the same period the year
before.
There was also a decline of
17% or 10,000 fewer injuries.
Of those 808 who died, 464
were driVers and the remainder
were passengers. 110 drivers
were known to be killed while
wearing seat belts or less than
24% of the drivers killed in
Ontario were wearing seat belts.
Another 56.5% were known not
to be wearing seat belts. In the
remaining 19% or less, it was
unknown.
In a study it was found that in
183 fa tal crashes, 37% were
killed by striking the dash or
instrument panel, 35% by the
steering assembly and 22% by
'the windshield. About 30% were
reported ejected. 37 1 5 00

Person Papers

0 I
49950 ° The federal Advisory Council
on the Status of Women has
released three new brochures in
its "Person Paper" series,
entitled The Price of Maternity,
Taxation Untangled andHealth
Hazards at Work.
The "Person Paper" series is a
popularization of the more
detailed research papers of
ACSW which deal with many
aspects of discrimination against
women in Canada. The previous
four brochures, namely Rape,
Fringe Benefits, Matrimonial
Property and Birth Planning,
have been widely distributed
across Canada and are now
available in their second edition
incorporating some revisions due
to law changes.
The Price of Maternity deals
with the complex federal and
provincial laws relating to
maternity leave and benefits, and
it "decodes" the Unemployment
Insurance Act in relation to the 15
weeks of maternity benefits
available to mothers. It highlights
the discrimination which remains
and makes recommendations for
change.
Taxation Untangled exposes
the subtle discrimination against
women in Canada's tax laws ; but
'goo beyond this to explain how
tax laws and regulations also'
benefit the rich far more than the
poor. And as statistics show so
clearly, by and large women are
far more poor than men in
Canada. This paper opens with a
clear explanation of how our tax
system works ' and encourages
women to come to grips wtih the
world of finance.
Health Hazards at Work breaks
new ground in the field of
discrimination. Based on a
length ACSW study entitled
Occupational Health Hazards to
Women, it is the first Canadian
study to deal with the specific
occupationally caused health
hazards which affect women,
fetuses and the reproductive
systems of men and WOrhen. This
brochure highlights the need for
intensive study in this neglected
area.

available free from The Advisory
