A visiting architect from Britain thinks that there can be better use of the billions of pounds of solid waste disposed of every year at a staggering cost. One better use for this monstrous waste includes building houses of trash. This British architect has already built a handful of trash houses. The walls of one house he built were constructed' with discarded tin cans. Cardboard tubes from old newspaper rolls were supports for the roof, which was layered with corrugated cardboard, Other building materials wer pop bottles, scrap polyester, and torn insulated strated bindings using a knit fabric. The very snowy weather conditions on Thursday evening didn't keep a large crowd from attending the card party in the 'Community Hall. Thirteen tables were playing and high scores went to Mrs. Lloyd Smith and Mrs. Chas. H arrison playing as a man. Low count was had by Mrs, Melville Jacklin and Chas, Harrison, Howard Brown won the travelling prize for lone hands. Cost of the completed house was $1 a square foot. A complete description of the trash house- building is featured in a book, Garbage Housing, written by Martin Fawley' and published by 'Halstead Press in New York City Trash houseS sound like far-out, far-off prospect. But your local lung association is concerned about creating new, pollution-free ways to dispose of solid waste. Too much trash still goes up in smoke at open dumps. To help curb the air pollution in your community, contact your lung association, the "Christmas Seal" people. And be sure you've answered your Christmas Seal letter. It's a Matter of Life and Breath.
