the amount of water contained in
the watershed area. This
information, along with weather
forecasts, will enable the
Authority to give ample warning
to municipalities about the threat
of flooding.
The authority has requested all
member municipalities to
complete a questionnaire
outlining flood prone areas,
listing addresses and phone
numbers of municipal officials,
and detailing inventories of
municipal and privately owned
equipment that could be used to
combat flood conditions.
A document will be prepared
explaining the new flood warning
system for circulation to all'
municipalities in the' watershed
covered by the Authority.

Curriculum planning at the
local level is already underway in
the Huron Perth Roman Catholic
Separate School system,
according to guidelines from the
Ministry of Education, superin-
tendent of curriculum BillEckert
told members of the board at their
regular Meeting in Dublin on
Monday night.
Mr. Eckert said education
minister Thomas Wells has said
that the • ministry will provide
curriculum guidelines that "make
sure kids get the fundamentals"
and provide a base for local
development of curriculum. The
HPRCSS system will use
curriculum guides that are
already available to plan courses
of study for kindergarten to grade
six students and will get
guidelines on grades seven and
eight in april from the ministry.
Curriculum committees on art
and science have already Started
work and a committee on reading
will start next week.
Teachers in the. Huron Perth
system are being asked what
curriculum committees they want
to sit on and will contribute
programs that they've air eady
developed and which are working
well. In addition to courses of
study already used in the board's
schools, the curriculum
committees will draw on ideas
from other boards, Mr. Eckert
said.
"We're not going to invent the
wheel all over again,". Mr. Eckert
said, explaining that developing
the curriculum is a Matter of
consolidating what teachersin the
system already know and what
can be gained front the
experience of others, If the
ministry guidelines are as
descriptive as has been indicated
"a lot of What We need to Wotk
with will be there", he said.
A system wide professional
development day on reading is
being held March 7 at St.
Michael's School in Stratford,
Mr. Eckert told the trustees.
Trustee David teahen of
Stratford asked if a record will.. be
kept of attendance at the PD day
since it is "an important day for
all teachers:';'
bireetor of Edticatidn John Vintar
The warning system will
consist of an elaborate monitoring
procedure to predict runoff in
watersheds and a chain of
emergency contact which will
inform municipalities of flood
peaks.
Information on snow depth,
told Mr. Teahen that principals
are responsible for informing the
administration about any
absences and filling in any
teachers who are sick and unable
to attend.
The bpard met in committee of
the whole for an hour and a half,
in public session for two hours
and then went back into
committee of the wh ole at 11:30.
One of the items being discussed
in private is the feasibililty of
introducing French in grades
other than seven and eight in
HPRCSS schools. But the only
report out of committee of the
whole was a recommendation that
the board's insurance committee
study the possibility of 24 hour
accident coverage for trustees
before policy renewal in October.
In other business, education
director Vintar told board
members that he hopes to have a
report on libraries inside the
system at the next board meeting.
Teachers will be irecognized for
outstanding participation in extra
curricular activities the same way
as in the past, .by a trustee
recognizing their work at a board
meeting, trustee Teahen
reported from the personnel
committee. More formal recog-
nition might penalize a teacher
who's worked just as. hard with a
team as another teacher who say,
has a championship team, Mr.
Teahen said.
Friendship
Club meets
weight of snow, crust and soil
conditions will be compiled along
watersheds by Authority staff
members throughout the winter.
The data will then be forwarded
to the meteorological section of
the Ministry of Natural
Resources, which can determine
Trustees felt that it was
probably no longer necessary to
appoint two of their number to go
over the monthly computerized
cheque list with business
superintendent Jack Lane. But,
trustee Teahen' pointed out, the
board is responsible for all money
paid out and he thought there
should be a chance to question
and to approve accounts at each
board meeting.
"If you think a bill's too high,
you'll want to question it",
trustee Mike Connolly said. He's
chairman of the board's finance
committee which will bring a
recommendation on h andling the
cheque list to the next board
meeting.
Trustee Ron Marcy asked the
administration about an article in
Dimensions, a magazine on
education from the ministry for
trustees, Which indicated that
there are more funds available for
special education. "How much
extra, has this board„ been
getting?" he wanted to know.
Superintendent Joe Mills
explained that there isn't an extra
per pupil grant available for
special ed, like there is for French
or metric studies, juSt an
adjustment in the grant weighting
factor that the ministry uses.
"There's a kind of window
dressing in Ministry reports when
they're talking about grants,"
added business superintendent
Jack Lane: "It's not nearly as
profitable as it looks then," said
Mr. Marcy.

The Grade 3 class presented
their assembly on Tuesday,
February 22nd. The first thing
the grade three class did was to
sing a song entitled "God. Who
Touches the Earth with Love".
The name of their play was "The
Bear'who wouldn't Hibernate". It
was related to their science study
because they are studying
hibernation. They had three trees
in the background which were
Mike Vader, Robbie Zimmer and
Robert Willie. The three bears
were baby: Mike Bridge, Mama;
Paul Thompson, Daddy:. Wayne
Wheeler. The Fox was Oscar Van
Den Assem. The rabbit was Kerry
Bauer.
Mr. Scott showed a short film
entitled "Feelings". He asked
various questions about the film
afterwards and received some
interesting replies from the
students,
Mr. Prior and Mr. Scott also
handed out the arm bars for the

champions.
We would like to thank Mrs.
