Despite the present wintry
weather, the Canada Manpower
Centre in Listowel is, already
making plans for summer, The
annual Student Summer .
Employment programme has
once again been launched in this
area, and that is always a sure
sign of spring.
John Chippa, Manager of the
Listowel Canada Manpower
Centre announced the re-appdint-
ment of Bob Miller as the
co-ordinator of the summer
student programme for 1977. Last
summer, Mr. Miller was quite
successful in promoting summer
employment in the area, and it is
hoped that the summer of 1977
will be even more successful.
During the next few weeks, Mr.
Miller will be visiting area
Secondary Schools to inform
students of the various
government summer employment
programmes, and to provide
information on summer job
hunting techniques.
Employers throughout the area
are being contacted by letter,
phone, and in person in an
attempt to uncover as many
employment opportunities as
possible for students this
,summer.
Although few employers have
yet committed themselves to
student summer employment,
Mr. Miller is quite optimistic. He
feels that there will be jobs
available and students should
begin actively seeking work at
once. Students may register with
with "Love". 1 John 4: 7-21 was
read by Mrs.. Leslie Knight and a
reading "The World, One
Neighborhood" was given by
Mrs. Calvin Cameron.
Mrs. Veitch gave an outline of
the preparation of this Year's
World Day of Prayer'Service and
also spoke on the uses to which
the special offering was put.
An interesting discussion and
question period on the theme
"Love in action" was led by Mrs.
Veitch.
A brief business meeting of the
W.M.S. followed with. Mrs.
Gordon Engel presiding. The
Spring Executive meeting is
scheduled for March 8 in St.
Andreim's Presbyterian Church,
Stratford, and Synodical in April
in Knox Church, Stratford. It was
the Canada Manpower Centre for
Students at 242 Inkerman Street,
East, weekdays until 5 p.m.
Many students have expressed
their willingness to do odd jobs

handicapped and doors wide

wheelchair must be provided on
both levels. In addition, a heated
viewing area must be available.
The ALPHA members would
also like to bring to the public's
attention the convenience of a
chair placed in strategic areas in
stores for handicapped or elderly
shoppers. Even a handy, folding
until the end of the school year.
Employers or householders who
require some part time help
should contact the Centre, at
Listowel 291-2922, and a student
will be referred to do the job.
some of those nice, bright
telephone ads, people have
suggested. They are the easiest-
to-read entries in the directory.
Mr. Scott said the telephone
ads were the only thing he had
received a number of complaints
about.
"However, if enough people
invest in the luxury phones, it can
help keep the basic monthly rate
down for other users," 'he
explained.
No complaints about the Owen
Sound directory had been
received at his Stratford office,
Mr. Scott said.
"I was expecting to get a few,
he said, "if for no other reason
than that a change was, in fact,
made."
The smaller type face was tried
out in Ottawa and Toronto, Mr
Scott said. Few complaints were
received from either centre.
"There would probably be
some complaints about that
no matter which way we did it",
Mr. Scott said. "Some people
want the name of the town nn the
side, while others want the names
of the people."
chair would be welcomed.
The next meeting will be held
in the Holmesville School on
March 22 at 8 p.m. It will mark
the first annivesary of ALPHA in

If you've had to use your new
phone book yet, you probably
thought the printing was smaller
this time.
As it turns out, the print is
approximately 20 per cent smaller
than in previous years. District
general Manager Jim Scott said
that where the old directories had
ten names, the new version
carries 11 or 12.
This is the first year that Bell
Canada has used photo
composition in printing its
directories on a large scale, Mr.
Scott explained.
"The change was for strictly
financial reasons," Mr. Scott
said. "I haven't seen the fi gures
for Owen Sound yet, but for the
Stratford directory the saving was
about 17 per cent."
Photo composition represents
one of the most recent trends in
commercial printing. It is
generally faster than older
methods, and produces a clearer
typeface. However, it is cheaper
only for large orders, which Bell
would certainly qualify for..
