Photo stirs memories
of old station
The picture of the old station
coach that appeared in the
January 19 issue of the Post
stirred memories fora number of
Brussels folks. It was used to
carry the mail from station to post
office and vice versa, as well as
people. B.A.McDonald of
Brussels called at the office of the
Post to tell us he remembered it
well, and recalled before 1910
there was also a stage that carried
the mail from Brussels to
VVroxeter before there was rural
mail service.
Earl Somers, now a rural mail
courier out of Brussels for a
number of years, drove that coach
for some time, when he and his
brother Bill operated a livery
stable here. He was the last one
to do so. ,
Previously it had been driven
by other livery stable owners, the
Andersons and Pluins.
We recall the commercial
travellers in those days made
good use of that coach. They
arrived by train with cases of
goods which they displayed at the
local hotels for viewing by their
merchant customers of the
village..
Not Not everyone had cars in those
days and many folks arriving or
departing by train called the
driver to pick them up at their
homes, or station. It was well
appreciated service.
We remember a coach dog that
Sam Plum had when he ran the
station coach. He had it well
trained. He would dump the bags
on the stage platform and
command the dog to guard them.
Guard them he did. No one dared
approach until they were put on
the train.
Those were the good old days
when folks were not rushing
about everywhere in cars and life
was lived at a more leisurely
pace.
