Send same card for 27 years
Going somewhere
Drive carefully
Intersections, curves and hills
are particularly dangerous during
the winter. The polishing action
of tires spinning and sliding on
' snow and ice increases the
slipperiness of already hazardous
surfaces, warns the Ontario
Safety League. Slow down before
you reach the intersection and
before going into a curve or down,
hill.
Motagists should be alert for
pedestrians at all times and
always yield the right-of-way to
them. Just because jaywalkers
are wrong doesn't make it right
for motorists to take chances with
•their safety, the Ontario Safety
League states.
'Fog does peculiar things to the
motorist, according to the Ontario
Safety League. In a fog, objects
look twice as far as they really
are; a driver's- subjective
judgment of speed could be half
his real speed; and red lights,
such as tail lights and flashing
warning signals, become almost
imperceptable.
HAYWARID'S
Chances are the people who
work at the post office never
notice it, in the huge volume of.
mail that they sort and deliver
just before Christmas, but there's
one card in a rather tattered
envelope that's been going in and
out of their 'hands every
Christmas for 27 years.
That's how long. Lois Moore of
Egmondville and her cousin,
Hugh Campbell of Bluevale have
been exchanging the same
Christmas card.
Mrs. Moore explains taht she
used to visit her Canipbell
relatives for summer holidays
when she was small. Her cousin
Hugh teased her and nicknamed
her the Chinaman. She called him
the Dutchman.
Oner year when they were
teenagers the Dutchman sent the
Chinaman a Christmas card and
the Chinaman cut it up, pasted it
on a piece of paper and sent it
back to him.
The next year, 1949, the.
Christmas card that's still in use
arrived, with a Scotsman on the
front and a verse that said "My
Christmas wish is yours to keep,
I'm verra glad tae be sending it.
But please return th ' card tae me
...it's sae costly that I'm just
lending it'."
Mrs. Moore took him at his
word and at Christmas 1950 sent
the car b ack to him. Ever since
then it's gone back and forth
between Mrs. Moore and her
cousin in Bluevale. Over the years
the Dutchman and the Chinaman
have grown up and have families
of their own.
For the first twenty years of the
card's life the two contented
themselves with adding a simple
signature' and the date. About
1969 though' they started
including a funny note, then wait
for an answer until the card was
sent back the next year.
It hasn't been an expensive
family tradition, but according to
the notes on the card, a new
envelope was purchased a feW
times. "Wasn't mike if I could
afford a new envelope plus
postage. However, we sold a few
old hens, making it possible to
send greetings," the Chinaman
