Buchanan tells Liberals PQ election blessing in disguise While A.I.B. controls definitely' are working, they are contributing to the unpoplularity of the government as, reflected in recent polls Hon.. Judd Buchanan federal minister of public works fold more than a hundred Liberals gathered at Vanastra Friday evening for the founding dinner and meeting of the new federal riding of Huron. "Some people still resent the restrictions that accompany controls" he said. Answering a query as to what - the AIB could do to control the price of coffee the Minister said that the price of coffee was establi shed outside the country and that Canada could not control this. However, the cost from the dock to the grocery shelf was being controlled. Last ye •ar the spread was approximately 12% up, this year the increase had been held to 4%. He said that while it was claimed, that wageS were controlled but profits were not the fact was, as indicated by statistics Canada, that in 1976 the real increase in wages was 4% while profits lost ground and, in terms of real dollars were down. Answering another question concerning the popularity of Mr. Trudeau the Minister said he could see no one on the horizon who can do as good a job as Mr. Trudeau. "I would anticipate that we will go into the next'. election under Mr. Trudeau and be returned as the Government of Canada" he said. Emphasizing the importance of meetings such as this founding meeting the Minister, who was introduced by Reeve Wm. Elston of Morris, said that such occasions provide an opportunity for communication - for members to learn what the ridings .are thinking and for people in the ridings to indicate their opinions 'to members. Mr. Buchanan told the meeting there were two important problems facing Canadians: - the economy and Quebec. "The election in Quebec may indeed have done us a favour: It sounded a loud warning bell. It tell us that some change is needed, certainly no change as suicidal as wrenching out a third of CAnada's heart and wealth and people. But subtle change which our Canadian system of confederation is well suited to absorb. • "The people of Quebec will 'not vote to leave Canada, I'm convinced of that. Three weeks after the Separatists won their election, a poll showed, that only se ven percent of Quebeckers favour separation. They may be a noisy seven percent, but the polling booth is a quiet place and noise won't have any influence there," he said. He said that ever since it became obvious, a few years ago, that French-speaking Canadians did not feel fully at home everywhere in our multi-cultural Canada -- not even in Ottawa, their own capital -- The Liberal Party and governments have been working to improve things. Today, French-speaking and English-speaking Canadians are much closer to receiving equal service from the federal civil service and equal opportunities within it. He added that this is an essential goal and we believe in its achievement. Urging continued and increased participation in the political process Mr. 'Buchanan reminded the meeting that he and they believed that the Liberal party offers Canada its best government for now and for the future. "It is up to you 'and me as responsible citizens to round up all the support we can. 1977 is the year to be political, in the proudest sense of ,the word. It is a time to be in politics. It is the time When a country --'our.country -- is being re-ereated", he said. "The decisions of the next eighteen months will influence Canada forever. Tell your neighbours that, tell your friends. Tell them how we're all going to work together -- that's all, of us -- the faniilies who have been here for 200 years and the, n ewcomers we welcomed yesterday who have contributed so much to our multi-cultural society. The farmer, the factory worker, ' the businessman, the politician, the French-"speaking and the English-speaking; the people who've come h ere from all over the world. We're all going to work together building 'and rebuilding, defining and redefining this country," he said. • Herb Kuntz of Formosa expressed appreciation• to Mr. Buchanan. During the evening entertainment was provided by Greg and Tracy McPherson of Seaforth and by Kim Craig,Blyth Chairman for the meeting was John Broadfoot, the president of the former Huron Middlesex riding. Greetings from the provincial riding of Huron Middlesex were extended by Jack Riddell, M.P.P.
