To date $100,830 of that has

in individual donations so far and
Shirley Cossitt of the new arena
committee told the PoSt that
construction should start as soon
as the weather breaks in the
spring. •
The arena committee met

the last Monday of each month at
the Brussels Fire Hall, at 8:30

come and see what's being

Tickets are on sale now for the

donors to the fund will appear in

Shope. ,-, ex-reeve
. f Jack McCutcheon has
officially retired from municipal
politics at the end of December
after six years as councillor and
six years as reeve of Brussels. In
1976 the former reeve was the
warden of Huron County. Looking
ahead, he thinks the village is
well prepared to meet the future.
"Our village is in really good
shape financially," he said. "The
streets are in really good shape,
ninety percent are dug and filled.
They're not paved as the sewers
are coming and there is no sense
in ripping up pavement," he said.
Mr. McCutcheon sees the'
'installation of sanitary sewers as
the number one priority for the
village with the need for a new
arena following 'close behind.
"If we are going to go
elsewhere for everything, then we
are really just going to become a
bedroom town, he said.
Brussels „needs some sort of
industry, Mr. McCutcheon feels,
so it will grow and fewer people
will have to commute out of the
village for work.
"I think we could grow very,
nijcely up to 1600 people," he
said.
Mr. McCutcheon said that he
was glad to get out of municipal
politics for awhile, although his
retirement may not be'
permanent.
"I really needed a chance to sit
back and take a look from
outside," he said. Maybe in two
years I'll run again or maybe
decide not to,'! said the ex-reeve

dealership in Brussels,

Canadian said "goodbye" to
1976 with remorse that it had
been a troubled year for our
country. Now we look forward to
1977 with hope that all our
nation's leaders will be given the
wisdom to find ways to resolve
the many problems that confront
them. May they be granted the-
sound 'judgement, prudence and
skill, needed to bring a truly
united Canada that will be the
great, and prosperous country it
has the people, and potentiality,
to become. Every Canadian, no
matter in what province, or area,
they live, should 'strive for the
good of all Canada, not for any
particUlar region. They must not
let self-interest, pride-in-origin,
greed or ,intolerence, influence
thier actions. .

Mother Nature blew out the old
year with a mighty wintery blast
of wind, and snow, a chill -12
celcius daytime temperature with
a -20 at night, and a day-long
storm on Friday that all but
brought things to a standstill,
closed some roads completely.
Highways 4, in the Clinton area;
21 from Goderich to km_berly and
north and south of Goderich, were
impassable. Highway 8 from
Mitchell to Goderich was reduced
to- one lane traffic and visibility
was nil. Highway 21 along the
lakeshore was closed for six hours
during the day and Friday night.
Blowing, drifting snow made
visibility almost nil and driving
extremely dangerous. Traffic
pile-ups were frequent.
Fortunately no fatalities or
serious injuries were reported in
this immediate area. Our rural
mail couriers 'out of Brussels
made a valiant try to service their
routes but had to turn back before
they completed them. New Year's
Eve would-be revellers found
travel haiardous and had to turn
back while otherswere 'content to
stay safely at:home or saw the
new year in with near-by friends.

temperatures have moderated.
The show has ceasd to fall, but
alas, the weathermen tell tis.more
is on the way. Where is the mild

This community can be
thankful we . were spared the
tragic fires that claimed litres in a
number of communities in
Canada, and elsewhere,' during
the holiday season. Thankful ; too,
that the traffic' accidents,
numerous in the recent stotni, did
not prove fatal to anyone in this
area.
