Christmas decor prominent at UCW meeting Christmas time provides a fertile field for the fruition of creative, artistic and innovative ideas. It was inevidenceatthe Blyth U.C.W. meeting held at the manse on Dec. 15. Handcrafted articles especially, in the rooms Christmas decor, attracted attention. Much to the delight of the ladies, President Susan Howson introduced the annual reports by reading an original poem in which she imitat­ ed the rhythm of the Christmas WMS celebrates Christmas The Christmas meeting of Mel­ ville Women’s Missionary Society was held at the home of Mrs. Gerald Gibson with 14 ladies, Mr Jamieson and twochildren pre­ sent. Mrs. MacLeod, the president, opened the meeting by repeating “This is the day that the Lord has made’ ’ and a prayer written by Peter Marshall for Christmas. The hymn, “Rejoice the Lord is King’ ’ was sung. The reports from the secretary and the work commit­ tee regarding donations of band­ ages, diapers and little suits for classic, “Twas the night before Christmas’’, and contrasted its setting and narrative with that of a Christmas meeting at the manse. Twelve red paper stockings hung in the archway and after each annual report was given, down came a stocking. The “clatter” in Susan’s poem was not that of reindeers’ hooves, but of Evening Unit girls busy in the kitchen putting last minute touches to the refreshments. Another innovative idea came to Zambia were given. Ruth Martin and Isabel Adams were to be a nominating committee to bring in a slate of officers for the coming year. There is to be no meeting in January. The treasurer ’ s report was given by Evelyn Mair and “Praise God from whom all blessings flow’ ’ was sung following the taking up of the collection. Mrs. MacLeod thanked every one for helping so generous­ ly while she was President and hoped they would do the same for the new president, Helen Elliott. light when, Susan played her autoharp. She also used it as effective accompaniment for her offertory solo, “Holy Night”. The worship service was conduc­ ted by Susan Howson and Joanne Bauman. Joanne read two short stories, “The Miracle of the Rose” and “You have to will it to Snow”. She also offered a beautiful prayer of thankfulness to close the worship period. President Susan thanked all for their support during the year. The roll call was answered with a verse containing the word gift. Mrs. MacLeodand Mrs. Mair prepared a Christmas programme and several ladies read Christmas stories and each were followed by Christmas Carols. Heather Douma and Jason Ropp were dressed as Joseph and Mary and had a baby in a cradle. The hymn, “O Come all Ye Faithful” was sung and Mrs. Jamieson closed the meeting with prayer. The Social Committee served a lovely lunch of sandwich­ es, Christmas cake and shortbread and a social time was enjoyed. Adeline Campbell read the min­ utes. Susan read a short financial report prepared by Evelyn Smith who was absent. Lenora Davidson’s report show­ ed that a card of thanks had been received from the Board of Ste­ wards for money received. Treasurer Debbie Pierce offered her resignation. She felt she should nothold the position any longer when she was unable to attend meetings. Edelgard Hoba was installed as treasurer. At this meeting, June Peck took a photograph of the Executive which willbe added to the Blyth U.C.W. archives book.
