How to deal with those
bills Santa doesn't pay
BYJOYCETAYLOR,CA
Do you general ly fi nd that you ’ re
still paying Christmas bills, well
into the New Year?
One way to avoid the overspend
ing pitfail is to start out by setting a
simple budget for yourself. And
the earlier you start, the better. It
entails nothing more than deciding
how much you’re going to spend -
absolute maximum - and sticking
to it. And whatever amount you
decide on, be su re you can afford it.
Let’stake a quick example, and see
how a Mrs. Jones would handle it.
Mrs. Jones decides she can
afford $500, tops, to cover all her
Christmas spending for tree,
dinner, stocking stuffers and
presents. She allocates $20 for the
tree, $90 for dinner, $40 for
stocking stuffers and $350 for
presents. Total $500. So far so
good.
Next she makes a shopping list
for everything. She reviews it
carefully and deletes all the items
she doesn’t really need to buy --
like that extra bottle of wine. On
her gift list, Mrs. Jones ranks all
the names in order of priority, and
decides how much she’s going to
spend on each. In her case it’s $100
on her husband, $40 apiece for her
four children, $50 on her parents,
$35 on her two friends and $5 on her
neighbor. Grand total $350.
Your own figures and total will
be different, but the point is, it’s
important to get it all down on
paper.
Once your budget is set, it helps
you control your spending. And,
don’t be tempted to exceed the
maximum you’ve set for each gift.
When you know where you stand,
start your shopping early. This will
give you time tocheck sales ads and
compare prices, store to store --
including discount stores. And
check things like guarantees and
exchange and return privileges as
well. This is important.
Now, are you going to buy for
cash or on credit? Carrying a lot of
cash around in crowded stores may
not be wise. A credit card is safer,
as along as you use it just like cash.
That means resisting any tempta
tion to overspend. Although it
might be hard to do, try to stick to
your budget.
Remember to keep all sales and
credit card slips for checking
against the bill that’s bound to
come in January. And pay the full
balance by the due date, to avoid
interest.
Remember, too, that some
credit cards charge lower interest
than others, but there may be a per
transactioncharge, socompare
cards. But, whether you pay by
cash or use a credit card, start with
a budgetand try to follow it closely.
By doing this you will minimize the
chance of overspending and have a
happier Christmas.

Then the second thing I want is a

things aren’t to much for you to
handle.
