Crusaders lose heart breaker Bulls split games with Mitchell BY LOIS McARTER It looked like a no-show contest on Wednesday night after winter’s first nasty blow but minutes before 9p.m. the visiting Mitchell Hawks and the referees finally made it to Brussels. Brussels Brian Campbell assist ed by Sean Kieffer and Dave Harding opened the scoring, se conds into the game, with Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter combining for the second goal at the 16:49 mark. It was 3:22 before the Bulls got their third goal with Mike Chap man and Mike Vincent collecting the points. They held Mitchell scoreless after a 14 - 13 difference in shots on net. The second period had Mitchell scoring their first goal mid-way through the 20 minutes and adding their second at the 5:25 mark. Kevin McArter assisted by Tim Fritz and Marty Rutledge added one more for Brussels before the period ended. Kevin Johnston assisted by Blake Flett and Brian Campbell scored a short-handed goal a minute into the third period. Tim Fritz assisted by Marty Rutledge and Kevin Lee scored the goal of the period with Marty Rutledge unassisted completing the scoring with 5:30 left in the game. Goalie Jeff McGavin kept Mit chell off the scoreboard for two complete periods as they out-shot Brussels 34 - 32 in the game. Brussels returned to Mitchell on Friday night which was too soon as the penalty sheet shows. Mitchell scored the first goal at 16:51 but Brussels tied the score at 12:05 with Blake Flett, Kevin Lee and Tim Fritz combining. Dave Harding assisted by Mike Chapman and Doug Taylor scored the go-ahead goal for Brussels at 7:35 and the period ended at 2 -1 in the second period and scored five unanswered goals before Blake Flett with Mike Chapman and Kevin Lee found the net at the 2:08 mark. Scoring slowed down consider ably in the third period with only 1:39 remaining when Tim Fritz assisted by Kevin McArter and Blake Flett scored a power play goal. Mitchell added their last goal in the empty net with only six seconds left to claim their 7 - 4 victory. The Clinton Mustangs were in town on Sunday but home ice was no advantage for the Bulls. Clinton opened the scoring five minutes into the period but Marty Rutledge scored on a pass from Kevin McArter at 12:46 to tie the game. Clinton came back to take the lead and scored three unanswered goalsbefore Brusselsstarted to come back. Kevin McArter scored an unassisted, short-handed goal at 6:52 and just a minute later Blake Flett assisted by Kevin McArter and Brian Campbell added another goal. Marty Rutledge assisted by Tim Fritz and Kevin Lee scored to tie the game. Clinton took the lead with only 1:21 remaining after a wide-open first period of hockey. The Bulls will be in Exeter on Friday night for an 8:30 game and back at home on Sunday against Thedford for a 2:00 p.m. game. The Intermediate hockey team was at home on Sunday night to the top place Wellesley team. The first two periods were played well and the score reflected the good play. Brussels opened the scoring with Paul Johnston assisted by Dave Golley and Brian TenPas getting the first goal. Dave Steph enson and Ken Cousins combined for the second goal and gave the Crusaders a 2 - 0 lead at the end of the first period. Wellesley opened the scoring in the second with Dave Stephenson scoring unassisted for Brussels’ third goal. Kevin Deitner and Randy Clark combined for Brus sels before Wellesley added two more goals. Ken Cousins and Randy Clarke both scored unassisted before the periodended at6 - 2 in Brussels favor. The third period was a disaster. Randy Clarke scored unassisted at the 17:43 mark for the Crusaders and then the wheels fell off or the skate blades or something. The team colours were red and orange, and it seemed that every time Brussels passed the puck it was to an orange sweater rather than a red one. Wellesley scored six unansw ered goals in the remainder of the game with three of those goals scored in a 58 second span. This left Brussels on the losing side of a 9 - 6 score. The Intermediates will be on the road next week for two games. Friday night will have them in Milverton at 9 p.m. and Sunday afternoon in Drayton at 1:30 p.m. Brussels Minor teams now in action Minor Sports had a full schedule at home on Friday night.
