From the Minister's Study THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1986. PAGE 21. Today the life of civilization is at stake BYREV.DOUGZEHR BRUSSELS MENN0N1TE FELLOWSHIP How long would it take your spouse to spend a million dollars? No problem, you say to yourself, just show me where the lottery table is. Perhaps it is the kind of challenge most people think they would like to have. At a thousand dollars a day, it would take more than two and a half years to spend that pile of money. Personally, I have trouble think ing of hundreds of thousands, not even to speak of a million dollars. And you know my mind can’t even comprehend one billion dollars. The number, one billion, is hard to even imagine for me. But the other day I thought about it. One billion seconds ago it was 1955 and I was just learning how to walk. One billion minutes ago it was about the year 83. One billions hours ago it was the vear 112,170 B.C. I thought about that because of two articles I read. First I read that more than one billion dollars is spent every day to keep the world’s military forces and machinery prepared for war. The other article was about‘Disrupted Lives’, an art display created by children be tween the ages of eight and fourteen. The young artists are among the 1.6 million Central Americans who have been made refugees by armed conflicts since 1975. As we thank God for the peace we enjoy and remember this week the 110,000 Canadians who gave their lives in a cause for peace, we must remember that world tension and violence has not ceased since 1945. Since the end of the Second World War, there have been more than 150 major armed conflicts fought in 66 countries. There has never been a year in which less than four wars have been waged. Wars since 1945 have caused more than 16 million deaths and created 20 million refugees. Many of the young Central American artists would marvel at thebooks, televisions and other ordinary conveniences that are taken for granted by many Cana dian children. To the refugee children from El Salvador and Guatemala, even paper and colour ed pencils are a luxury. The small luxury which made the artwork possible was supplied by Canadian social workers visiting the refugee camps. The resulting art is not the kind of sketching you would want to adorn your refriger ator door with. The haunting descriptions of their work, written by the children, illustrate what military games are capable of doing to them. Blame is not important to children. After all, who pays the bills for bullets and bombs matters little to them. ‘ ‘They came into our village and separated men from women and children, then they put the men together and shot them.” ‘ ‘The houses are burning and trees are catching fire. The soldiers are killing people and people are running. The airplanes behind, killing people with bombs. The helicopter machine-gunning and the soldiers coming behind shoot ing.” “The plane lit a fire on the houses and those of us walking were burned. So we ran away so Blyth 4-H news The seventh and final meeting of the Blyth I ‘‘Milky Way” 4H club was held at the home of Elaine Brown on October 28 at 7 p.m. The members judged four differ ent menus according to Canada’s Food Guide. The exhibit entitled ‘‘Milk - From the Farmer to You” was discussed. Achievement Night will be held on November 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Hullett Central Public School, Londesboro. they couldn’t kill us. They burned my father and they threw my one-year-old brother in the river. They burned the cornfields so we wouldn’t be able to eat.” Today the very life of civilization is itself at stake. Fear and insecurity abound in our overarm ed and undernourished world. The more weapons we create, the greater our insecurity. The words of an old prophet reflectan eternal truth when he said, “Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, and who rely on horses, and who trust in chariots because they are many, and in horsemen because they are strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or consult the Lord.” i Blyth Christian Reformed Church HIGHWAY 4, BLYTH Rev. ALL VISITORS WELCOME A couple of thousand years have passed, but the issues are notmuch different. The United States and the Soviet Union are the Egypts of today. Instead of horses, chariots and horsemen, we have planes, submarines and bombs. The words change, but the result is the same. The children suffer and pay theprice. They pay the price as refugees and orphans, as the hungry and uneducated, and as the suffering and dying. It will be a great day when medical research or world relief or third world development has all the funding it needs and an Armed Forces officer has to run across the country to raise money for a jet fighter.
