A thank you to some special coaches
THE EDITOR,
Last Saturday night we had the
privilege to attend a dinner and
awards presentation for our dau
ghter’s ball team.
This year was a very special year
for the Brussels Squirt girls as they
won the Tri-county Championship
after a successful season, climaxed
by a gruelling two-day tournament
at Wingham played in mid-August
heat.
Following the dinner and pre
sentation, the coaches of the team
re-lived some of the highlights of
the season and especially, the
championship tournament. They
praised the girls for all their hard
work and team play on the field that
led to their success. They thanked
the parents for their team support
when they needed transportation
or any other minor contribution
that we made to the team.
While the team members listen
ed, you could tell that our children
were once again the coaches’
children as they had been all

FRIDAY: Naturally the topic got
round to Halloween this morning,
particularly when Julia showed up
dressed as a belly-dancer. She and
the staff at her office were dressing
up for the day.
Ward said Halloween sure cost a
lot more than when he was a kid.
Everybody has expensive cos

the old days people used to dress
up in any old thing they could find.

summer at practices and games.
Relfectingonthe night’s pro
ceedings when he got home, I felt
more than a little uneasy that no
one had really paid tribute to the
people who really brought these
young girls together and moulded
them into a winning team in more
ways than one - the coaches.
First, they taught them that
team sport is for fun and
recreation; and fun they had. Our
daughter could hardly wait for
games and practices and I’m sure
the other girls felt the same.
Secondly, they taught them to
play to the very best of their ability
within therulesofthe game and
good sportsmanship. This was not
a team built around one or two star
players. It was a team where each
girl knew that she was treated
firmly and fairly; a team where
each girl could feel that she
contributed whetheritwas for a
winning or a losing cause. The
coaches displayed a faith in each of
the girls and I’m sure they felt well
rewarded at the end of that

that one until Julia noted that it

had definitely instilled that winn

for success in any sport.
There was never a word of
dissension on the team all season, a
tribute to the respect these kids
have for you people at an age whn
they are very easily influenced.
Respect is something you cannot
buy, you must earn it and you have
certainly done that. We parents are

Finally, and perhaps most im

something to build on for the rest of
their lives. That something is
‘ ‘ Character’ ’, an intangible that no
one can put a finger on but you
coaches can certainly feel that you
had a very big hand in developing.
