Search for crop aid
on hold for harvest
With the first week of sunshine
in the past month and a half forcing
farmers to work around the clock on
backlogged field work, the search
for disaster assistance for area
farmers hard hit by recent record
rainfalls has had to be put on a back
burner.
“There has been no contact
between us since (John) Wises’s
visit -- we’re all too busy trying to
harvest,” said Bev Hill, spokes
man for the Disaster Aid Commit
tee set up to seek financial help for
farmers in the county, some of
whom have been virtually wiped
out by weather conditions this fall.
At the disaster committee’s
request, federal agriculture mini
ster John Wise toured Exeter area
farms October 17 to see crop
damage first hand, but since then
the only word to come from either
level of government is a promise to
review the Canada/Ontario crop
insurance scheme, another sore
point with beleagured farmers.
HFA

large Murray Crawford, John Van
Beers, Donald Dow and Bruce

of a shortage of candidates.

Jim Fitzgerald, executive assistant
toMPP Jack Riddell, provincial
minister of agriculture, said noth
ing could be done about the
problem until a meeting could take
place between the two levels of
government, but couldn’t say
when that might occur.
Paul Klopp, president of the
Huron Federation of Agriculture,
presented a resolution on farm aid
at the monthly meeting of the
Ontario Federation in Toronto last
week. The matter is expected to be
high on the agenda at the annual
OFA convention, to be held
