Rabies clinics set for Even with mandatory rabies immunization of pets now provided for under the Ontario Health Promotion and Protection Act, Huron County will not likely consider implementing the plan before Spring, according to Ed Harrison, director of public health inspections for the county. He said that in order for the program to become law, each county must make application to the Ontario Ministry of Health for inclusion in the scheme, which provides for low-cost immuniza tion clinics for pets once a year, as well as for a maximum fine of $5,000to pet owners who do not comply with the law. The scheme comes into effect November 1. Mr. Harrison confirmed that the Huron Board of Health will be discussing the plan in the near future, and will hopefully have vaccination clinics in place by Spring. Eleven cases of rabid animals have been confirmed in the county this year, with several persons being treated as a result of suspected contact with infected animals. Six of the reported cases involv ed rabid foxes in East Wawanosh township, an area outside the air-drop of vaccine-baited sponges intended to provide protection for wild animals which pick them up. The Ministry of Natural Resources has provided for the bait drop in central Huron over the past two years, and officials report that the scheme looks promising in reduc ing the incidence of the disease in the area. Bruce, Perth and Middlesex counties have all been granted inclusion in the scheme, and plan to enforce the regulation which states that all dogs and cats three months of age or older must be vaccinated. A veterinarian may exempt old or infirm pets, provided they are kept confined or retrained in order to avoid exposure to the disease. Mr. Harrison said that his office has already contacted veterinar ians within the county, all of whom have agreed to assist with the clinics, which likely cost about $6 per animal peryear. Hedecided that once the plan is in place, the clinics would be widely advertised, with the MOH giving pet owners every opportunity to comply with the law before considering a fine. Mrs. Len Archambault and Marjorie MDougall attended the 72nd Annual Convention of the London Area Women’ s Institute on October 16 and 17. This was held at the Ukranian Country Club, Lon don. spring Protected pets will receive an immunization certificate or rabies vaccination identification tag, with the due date for re-vaccination clearly indicated. BY LERA RYAN FAMILY RESOURCE MAN AGEMENT SPECIALIST If you died tomorrow, would anyone suffer financially? If your answer is yes, you will want to have life insurance. The prime purpose of life insurance is to provide financialprotectionfor your de pendents when you die. Perhaps your spouse could enter the work force or continue to provide income from the farm business or employment. Perhaps there would be income from investments to provide for your family. But for many young families, life insurance is the way to provide for surviving depen dents. Should young children be cover ed by life insurance? Probably no one in the family is financially dependent on a child. The financial loss would be the burial expense. Money spent on insurance for a child or teenager would probably be better spent on additional insurance for the income earner (s). Should a homemaker’s life be insured? If there are children, consider how much money would be needed to keep the family functioning if the homemaker died. Consider also whether the surviving spouse would have the resources to maintain the home. As children reach certain ages, they can handle a number of household responsibilities. Insurance needs increase while the family is growing and decrease as the family becomes older and smaller. Over the years, life insurance is a big investment. Plan it carefully to suit your present budget and to ensure an adequate life style for those who survive you. Ethel 4-H club taste-tests BY PAT COWMAN In meeting three the Ethel III Dairy Queens taste-tested four different types of cheese. They also sampled Cheese Souffle and Mini Cheesecakes which were deli cious. Meeting four was held at Liz den Dekker’s house in order to try the microwave directions for Pork Paprika. The pork dish was accompanied by a Herb Vegetable Dish and Yogurt Popsicles. Every one was blindfolded in order to try to tell the difference between butter and margarine. It sounds easy but only two members were able to tell the difference. Special thanks to Mrs. den Dekker for allowing us to meet in her house. CONVINCE YOURSELF.
