The Citizen, 1986-10-15, Page 20From the Minister's Study THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1986. PAGE 21. The power of God can help fight loneliness BY DON V AIR PASTOR WESTFIELD FELLOWSHIP HOUR Possibly as you read this article in the Citizen, you are alone and lonely. Maybe as the dictionary puts it you are “sad from being alone.” Loneliness is something all human beings understand experientially. When I think of loneliness I do Blyth UCW holds Thankoffering A larger number than usual from Blyth and many from Walton, Brussels, Belgrave and Calvin Brick United Churches attended the U.C.W. Thankoffering service in Blyth on the night of October 12. Myrtle Vodden and Evalena Webster conducted the worship service. They read profiles of Job and Paul which told of their habit of thanking God both in good times and in bad. They had gone through terrible hardships and suffering, but kept right on thanking and praising Him. He blessed them for it. Kim Crawford, the guest speak er, a second year student at the University ofGuelph and active there in the Campus Youth for Christ Crusade was introduced by Joanne Bauman and thanked by Ruby Pattison. The audience hung on every word of Kim’s talk which revealed the sacrifices she made - giving up a summer job, and not immediately think of my specific experiences, but rather of certain people in society for whom loneliness can be part and parcel of everyday living. I think of the elderly person whose family is grown and away from home and whose life-long mate has died. Not only has this individual losthusbandorwife, but most of their dearest friends have gone as well. foregoing the fun of playing on her very successful soccer team in competition - all this to go to the southern tipoflndiato help five native girls to become conscious of the power of God in Outreach, Follow-up and Discipleship. The musical part of the program consisted of a number by the choir, two trumpet solos by Rev. Ken Bauman and a vocal solo played on Kim Crawford’s recorder. The Evening Unit served lunch downstairs which was followed by a multitude of questions posed to Kim. Everyone seemed eager to learn more about living conditions in the south of India and the struggle Christians, very much in the minority, go through endea vouring to spread the good news of “the abundant life”. The summer was a rewarding one. Before she left, she had actually seen results of her work which strengthened her faith in the Christian religion which stresses Love. I think of some single people who have longed for the companionship of marriage and family but for one reason or another, it just was not to be. I think of the man who is separated from his wife and family for long periods of time because of the nature of his work. I think also of the loneliness of the one who is separated or divorced. Most people try in practical ways to do something about loneliness, be it theirs or someone else’s. We visit one another, we belong to certain organizations and clubs, we shower attention upon a beloved pet. Some people resort to alcohol or even sacrifice moral principles for a fleeting moment of companionship that is false. Some ways of dealing with our loneliness are practical and right, but some are wrong and only complicate and intensify the pro blem. a Blyth Christian 4^ Reformed Church HIGHWAY4, BLYTH Rev. ALL VISITORS WELCOME God understands and cares about your loneliness and your life, far more than you will ever know. Nothing can ever take the place or compare with the companionship of God and Christ Jesus. Our hearts were made for Him and Him alone. Jesus Christ is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. You cannot be separated from Him by death, for He ever lives. When all is said and done, the grace of Jesus Christ is sufficient for all of your life. Having said the above, one does not seek the companionship of Christ just because he/she is lonely. One comes to Jesus because he recognizes that he is a sinner, and need Him to be their Saviour. There is power in His blood shed on Calvary’s cross to forgive, cleanse and fill our hearts with His matchless presence. In Revelation 3:20 Jesus said “Behold 1 stand at the door and knock, if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him and will sup with him, and he with me.’’To those who do open their hearts’ door and welcome the Saviour in, He says to you what He said to His disciples long ago in Matthew28:22 ... “Lol am with you always, even unto the end of the age.” BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT LORD.TeachMeToPray Seminar When: Saturday, October18 from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Where: At the Blyth Christian Reformed Church on Hwy. 4 Sponsored byCOFFEE BREAK & STORY HOUR What will this seminar cover: Session I examines our hang ups in prayer, conditions and promises in prayer Session II examines what it means to pray from the heart All of this will be led by ELDE AN KAMP who is the representative of CRC publications.
