Members of council appeared reluctant to consider moving the site but agreed when Breede said nothing would be done until the museum committee reported back. Dunlop’s tomb, enclosed in a rectangular concrete walled struc ture, can be reached by climbing a sometimes steep pathway through brush. Council members recently climbed the hillside to the tomb after a rainfall and all but Warden Leona Armstrong who wore spike heels reached the top without slipping and sliding, according to Colborne Township Reeve J. Rus sel Kernighan. Breede said that there is no proof BY BILL BRAGG Vandalism has forced Huron County officials to consider moving William Tiger Dunlop’s tomb from its historic resting place on a wooded hillside overlooking God erich, the town he co-founded. • Claus Breede, project director of the Huron County Museum, was authorized by Huron County Coun cil at the October meeting to investigate the possibility of mov ing the tomb to a location where supervision of the site can be carried out more effectively. Breede told council that vanda lism continues to be a problem. Two steel reinforced concrete benches on the path up the hillside on the way to the tomb have been destroyed apparently by sledge\that Dunlop, one of the most hammers. Steelcablesin the parking lot have been taken off their mounts and the clamps removed. The clamps were replaced and remov ed again within a week, he said. A couple of weeks ago, he said, the Canadian flag that flew over the site on top of a 40 foot pole was stolen. ‘ ‘The only way to get up to it is by Blyth Public School news colorfpj figures of the 182Ds and 1830s in Upper Canada, is buried at the tomb site. ‘‘We think there is a Dunlop buried there,” he said, ‘‘but we’re ncrt sure whether it is his brother (Robert) or Tiger or both of them. ’ ’ Tiger Dunlop died at Lachine, Quebec, on June 29, 1848. His sister went to Lachine to bring back his body but the weather was so There is a strong possibility, Breede said, that Dunlop may have been buried in Hamilton. Born in Scotland in 1792, Dunlop served in Canada in the 89th regiment during the war of 1812. He accompanied his regiment to India where, legend has it, he acquired his nickname by staring down a tiger. Because of ill health, he return ed to England on half pay and became a journalist. In 1826, he came to Canada with John Galt, with whom he co founded Goderich, and settled in the Huron district in the service of the Canada Company as Warden of the Forests. He resigned some years later after charging the company .\vith negldbt of eettlers’ rights. He entered politics as an independent and represented Hu ron in the Legislative Assembly of Canada between 1841 and 1846. At the time of his death in 1848, he was superintendent of the Lachine Canal. He was unmarried.
