Brussels council briefs Land purchase going slowly The purchase of industrial land for the village of Brussels contin ues to move slowly along. Hugh Hanly, village clerk- treasurer, told council that the village lawyer is involved in a title search on the property being purchased from William Wheeler in the north end of the village. But the 13.5 acre parcel of property is listed under four different deeds so the process may take a while. The lawyer also advised having the property surveyed. Council has delivered a legal order tovacatetoa tenant in the village trailer park. In other disciplinary action, council voted to ask a homeowner in the north end of the village to clean up a boulevard where garbage has been burned; to send a letter to a resident in the south end to clean up his yard and ask the owners of cars parked semi-permanently on a village parking lot to remove them. Council endorsed a resolution from the township of Oxford-on- Rideau to the provincial govern ment asking for a cap on liability insurance settlements of $1,000,000 because the high costs of settlements was making insur ance so costly, programs that affect the quality of life are being cut back by municipalities.***** Building permits were issued to Newry Veterinary Clinic for a portable office, Alex Keffer for an addition to his verandah, Ken Williams for a chimney and Brian Rutledge for a garage.***** Council will review a 1975 by-law governing the height of fences around swimming pools. Counci lor Neil MacDonald pointed out that the by-law requires a five-foot fence while insurance policies require only a four-foot fence. Council prepared for Halloween by asking that four firemen be on patrol as well as town works employees on both Friday night, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 if necessary. Council voted to reply to a letter from J. Axtmann, principal of the Brussels Public School inquiring about sidewalks by saying the village did not have the funds for such a project at this time. Councillors pointed out that there is a designated walk-way along one side of the road marked off by a yellow line but often school employees use the area to park their cars leaving no room for walking.
