Brussels Librarian Susan Nichol introduces youngsters to the world of books while their mothers take part in the “Girls’ Getaway’’ downstairs in the library on Wednesday mornings. The next “Getaway” is planned for Oct. 15. Girls Getaway starts in Brussels “Girl’s Getaway?’’ What in Brussels is that? Basically it is a morning get together, where you can drop-in, relax over a cup of tea or coffee and just chat, share experiences or find out what is going on in the community. It originally started last June in the Brussels Public Library to offer women a chance to get away from the house to meet New reporter joins The Citizen The latest addition to the editorial staff at The Citizen says she is delighted to be associated with Huron County’s newest news paper. “I’m very proud to be part of an independent paper, especially one asuniqueasTheCitizen,’’ says Toby Rainey. “And it is a real pleasure to work with Keith and J ill Roulston.” Born in Clinton, Ms. Rainey is the youngest daughter of Fred and Huron woman has winning recipe This summer, in celebration of the McIntosh Apple, Ontario’s gift to the world, Foodland Ontario sponsored a recipe contest - ‘Your Favorite Apple Dessert’. Over 700 recipes poured in from across Ontario. The winning recipes are a testament to treasured traditions: it seems that grandmother’s apple pie is still as popular as ever! Fifteen prizes were awarded and three top winners selected by five judges: Elizabeth Baird, well- known food historian and cookbook author; Carroll Allen, editor of Recipes Only; Judy Creighton, food writer for Canadian Press; Helen Gagen and Lucy Waverman, people and socialize. Ladies who have pre-school children may bring them with them. With the busy summer the ladies found it difficult to get together, butthey are ready to start again and hopefully prevent any severe cases of “cabin fever" during the winter months. Atthis point in time, they plan to meet every other Wednesday morning in the basement of the Cela Sloman, who taughtfor nearly 40 years on the Canadian National School-on-Wheels now being re stored as an historical landmark in Clinton. After spending nearly 20 years on Vancouver Island and in northern Alberta, she returned in the area three years ago in order to become involved with the restora tion of the old travelling school where she spent her childhood. A graduate of Ryerson Polytech nical Institute in Toronto, Ms. Rainey has worked on weekly prominent magazine and news paper food journalists. The judges agreed that most of the recipes were variations of old-fashioned favorites but with some new twists. To qualify for the Foodland apple dessert contest, the recipes had to contain at least 4 Ontario apples. As well, all other important ingredients should be grown in Ontario. Approximately 40 recipes were tested and judged on appear ance, taste (flavor/texture), com plexity, originality and use of Ontario ingredients. Myrtle Hamilton, Clinton was one of the third prize winners with her apple dessert. Brussels Library. Librarian. Susan Nichol has kindly agreed to take the children upstairs for a story hour. The group hopes once it gets organized, to have occasional speakers or demonstrations and provide an information centre of community events and activities. It’s a great way to meet people. The next meeting will be Wednes day, October 15, from 10:00 -11:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome. newspapers in three provinces, as editor, reporter, photographer and advertising manager, and also spenx 14 months in advertising with the Rural Voice magazine in Huron and Perth.
