As I listen to the rain falling outside my study window again this morning, I am reminded to breathe a prayer for the farmers of our community. These are agonizing times, although I’m sure we can never fully understand. The radio and newspaper farm correspondents paint a very bleak picture for today and the future. Readers and advertisers of this paper would like to reach out to farmers everywhere with a message of support and hope. We have depended on the farm community to feed our sprawling urban communities and we know that our whole rural way of life depends on your continuing contribution. Some of our best friends are farmers. In times like these we want to cry with you. Many of usdon’tknow howto help, but we need you. We don’t know quite what to say, but we care about you. We are not sure how to respond, but we value you highly. We don’t understand all the pressure you face, .... and many others who would have liked to be included but were missed due to time constraints. • 1 Brussels Mennonite Fellowship Stephenson’s Grocery, Brussels Brussels EMA Food Vincent Farm Equipment Ltd., Seaforth McCutcheon Grocery, Brussels McGavin Farm Equipment Ltd., Walton H. We may not comprehend the market situations or the commodities futures, but we see that it affects you. Perhaps the time has come for our community to reverse thetrend in our society towards individualism. We need each other. Each of you, each one of us, is an integral part of our community. So today I make a plea. A plea to throw open the doors. Openthedoorsof ourchurches for prayer vigils. Open the doors of the ministers’ studies for confidential listening. Open the doors of our resource centres for personal counseling. Open the doors of our banks for honesty and fairness. Open the doors of our homes for laughterand sharing. Open the doors forthis is no time for anyone to be alone. Open the doors everywhere, so that in troubled times we all might find support, encouragement and companionship. We need each other. - Written on behalf of the community by Rev. Doug Zehr Ken Campbell Elevators, Dublin Sparling’s Propane Co.
