Van Brook Farms of RR 2, Brussels captured three Grand Championships, two Reserve Grands, and two Breeder’s Herd awards, with Mr. Van Vliet showing all the animals himself. As well, his Grand Champion Hampshire gilttook the top price at the sale, $700, while her litter mate sold for only $25 less. Van Brook Rockey 110 was the Grand Champion Hampshire gilt, while Van Brook Farms also took the Breeder’s Herd award for Hamps. In the Yorkshire Division, Van Brook Lad won Grand Cham pion Boar, with Van Brook Lad A/F close behind to grab the Reserve Grand. Van Brook Sally was Reserve Grand Champion Gilt, and again, Van Brook Farms took the York Breeder’s Herd ribbon. In the Landrace Division, Van Brook Karragarden walked off with the farm’s third Grand Championship ribbon for best boar. Over the past 20 years, Van Brook swine have been winning major awards at eight or 10 of the country’s top fairs and shows each year, including the Royal Winter Fair, Regina’s Agribition, the Western Fair, and the Pork Congress. Last November, when the family returned in triumph from Regina, they found one of their barns, with all stock, had been destroyed by fire. The overall number of swine exhibited at the Western Fair was down slightly this year, a fact which Judge Murray Junker of Tavistock attributed to the current high pork prices influencing breed ers to sell stock rather than show. However, Mr. Van Vliet said he felt the numbers were down simply because the show rejected a number of exhbitors who “didn't get their entries in on time.” Judge Junker said that although the number of entries was not large at London this year, “there was a consistent high quality to them,” making it an excellent show.
