Russ Wilson
keeps
history alive
Walking into Russ Wilson’s
tiny apartment in Blyth is like
walking into a history of the
Huron Pioneer Thresher and
Hobby Association’s annual
reunion (and the history of a few
other things as well).
There on the wall is a
collection of the badges and
ribbons Mr. Wilson wore as a
worker at the Reunion for many
years of the history of the
organization. Though he’s 91
now, he’ll still have a part in this
25th Thresher Reunion when
he mounts a display of his old
photographs. Last year he
missed the show for the first
time since it began because he
was in the hospital.
The native of East Wawa-
nosh township has long had a
passion for history and over the
years has rescued some old
farming equipment that was
destined for the scrap heap.
Some ofhis relatives didn’t take
a great interest in saving the old
wooden implements but he did
what he could, he recalls.
Although he used to go
threshing every fall and in the
early years of the Reunion often
ran the separator, he was not a
big steam engine man. His
strength was working with
horses and he remembers
working with teams of horses

Friday is especially for seniors
and disabled vistors but every
one is welcome to attend.
One of the great rewards for
Mrs. Mclnnes for all her years
of organizing the show is
getting to meet all the different
people involved, people not
only from across Ontario but
from the United States as well.
It was also very gratifying to see
how the show grew and expand

when he was 13 years old,
dragging logs out of the bush in
winter and driving an eight
horse team on a ditching
machine.
His father dealt in grain as
well as farming and Russ
remembers drawing a lot of
grain before World War I when
he joined the army.
As well as being an integral
part of the early years of the
Blyth show, the buttons on
Russ’ wall show he’s also
visited many of the other shows
around the country. He’s visit
ed a big show in Ohio three
times, he recalls and was also at
the big six-day show in Saska
toon once. His favourite show
other than Blyth is the show at
Caledonia. The show is held on
the banks of the Grand River
with a pioneer town on the site.
He not only visited the other
