Russ Wilson keeps history alive Walking into Russ Wilson’s tiny apartment in Blyth is like walking into a history of the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association’s annual reunion (and the history of a few other things as well). There on the wall is a collection of the badges and ribbons Mr. Wilson wore as a worker at the Reunion for many years of the history of the organization. Though he’s 91 now, he’ll still have a part in this 25th Thresher Reunion when he mounts a display of his old photographs. Last year he missed the show for the first time since it began because he was in the hospital. The native of East Wawa- nosh township has long had a passion for history and over the years has rescued some old farming equipment that was destined for the scrap heap. Some ofhis relatives didn’t take a great interest in saving the old wooden implements but he did what he could, he recalls. Although he used to go threshing every fall and in the early years of the Reunion often ran the separator, he was not a big steam engine man. Friday is especially for seniors and disabled vistors but every­ one is welcome to attend. One of the great rewards for Mrs. Mclnnes for all her years of organizing the show is getting to meet all the different people involved, people not only from across Ontario but from the United States as well. It was also very gratifying to see how the show grew and expand­ ed as well, she says. when he was 13 years old, dragging logs out of the bush in winter and driving an eight­ horse team on a ditching machine. His father dealt in grain as well as farming and Russ remembers drawing a lot of grain before World War I when he joined the army. As well as being an integral part of the early years of the Blyth show, the buttons on Russ’ wall show he’s also visited many of the other shows around the country. He’s visit­ ed a big show in Ohio three times, he recalls and was also at the big six-day show in Saska­ toon once. His favourite show other than Blyth is the show at Caledonia. The show is held on the banks of the Grand River with a pioneer town on the site.
