Reunion idea born at Simon Hallahan's
The name sounds strange
now: “Thresher Reunion’’.
Why “reunion?’’ In the early
days, recalls long-time secre
tary-treasurer Simon Halla-
han, it really was a reunion of
former threshermen.
For more than 20 years the
name Simon Hallahan was
synonymous with the Thresher
Reunion. The first meeting of
the threshermen took place, he
recalls now, in his home on May
13, 1961.
At the first meeting Harold
Turner, a former steam engi
neer for Goderich was named
chairman, Alex Manning of
Blyth was named treasurer and
Simon was named secretary, a
position he held until a few
years ago.
Among the others at that first
meeting were Hugh Chisholm
of Sarnia, a steam engineer,
Stuart Muir of Paisley, Willie
Joe Hallahan and John Halla-
han.
Until the 1970's, the sawmill at the Thresher Reunion was an
outdoor mill.
HaroldTurner suggested,
Simon recalls, that he write to
all the former threshermen and
invite them to a meeting at the
Blyth Orange Hall.
At that later meeting Ron
Marks of Walton had a minia
ture steam engine and there
was a fiddler to provide enter
tainment. The meeting was so
successful that the former
threshermen decided to hold a
reunion.
That first Thresher Reunion
in 1962 saw five steam engines,
two separators and a rented
sawmill in operation. As audi
ence for the event grew over the
years, the suggestion came that
there should be entertainment
