Power older than the steam engine was on display for severalyears in the early 1970 s when this team of oxen pulled a wagon around the grounds. Hard work and ingenuity by restorers makes old equipment like new Continued from page A-5 pistons on most easter ma chines giving it much more power. He got the engine in 1965 and he knew the flues were done so the first thing he did was replace those. The ma chine has never had hard water in it since except when he goes to a show, he says. He has a special tank hitched up to the downspout from his barn roof to catch and save rainwater. He rebuilt the roof on the tractor and the only thing that isn’t original, he says, is the smokestack which is from a 1914 model after a trucking mishap wrecked the original. Learning how to run the engine wasn’t difficult, he says. He learned at the should er of an operator in the West. In 1928 he fired a similar tractor for 31 straight days, he says. On the farm he worked on in the West there were two steam tractors, one powered by straw and one by coal. The other operator, who fired the straw- powered tractor, used to laugh at him because of the extra work he had to do after supper each night, getting the clinkers out and banking the fire to keep it going overnight. But he had the last laugh in the morning, Mr. Andrews says, when he could quickly get up steam after getting more sleep than the guy who had to get up early to build up enough steam from the straw-fire. The big engine has made two other appearances this summer so far, appearing at the Col- borne Township 150th anniver sary celebration and the big celebration at Port Albert. The machine is run by Dan Hallahan at these shows. and to the 25th Reunion of the Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association GIVE YOUR HOME ABRAND NEWLOOK!
