He waited nearly 40 years before he was finally able to buy this 1911 Case steam tractor in 1965. Warner remembers western threshing In an old barn tucked behind the stores of main street, Auburn, sitsal93801iver 80 tractorandbesideitstands a man typical of the men who have made the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Associa tion work over the year&. ‘ ‘This one is on next winter’s list,” says Warner Andrews pointing to the old tractor, looking the worse for nearly 50 years of work. He picked up the tractor for $50 in Western Canada. It cost him $400 to bring it home. The engine was overheating so he pulled it apart, found it nearly filled up with mud, (perhaps from hav ing a trip into a slough at some time in its history). He used steam from his steam engine to blow the engine out and now the tractor works well, even if it isn’t any great shakes for look. ‘‘It’ll look just like a new one in the spring,” he says. ‘‘I found a guy in St. Marys who’ll make new fenders for it.” It’s the kind of meticulous rebuild- ing work that goes on all over the province that makes shows like the Blyth Thresher Re union possible. Long hours and plenty of ingenuity go into turning often-derelict equip ment into shining reminders of our rural past. Through a door is another room in the barn and a 1935 Goodison threshing machine. He bought the machine in 1936 and, he chuckles, since then he sold the machine three times and got it back for nothing. He’s full of stories about experiences with the machine and other stories while he threshed throughout West Wawanosh and Ashfield township in the 1930’s and 40’s. In 1940-41 he threshed 100 days, he recalls. Outside the barn, parked on a raised earthen ramp is a huge 1911 Case steam tractor. It was nearly 40 years after he first saw the engine in 1928 in Western Canada until he was finally able to talk the owner into selling it to him. The machine was sold for $2,350 when it was new in Winnipeg. He bought the machine in the 1960’s for $1,200. Today he’s had two offers of $20,000. Theengineis much bigger than the engines which were normally used here in eastern Canada. It developed 75 horse power and could power big threshing machines where four men werekeptbusy pitching sheaves into the feeder all day long.
