The old campaigner is always on the trail - never knowing who might be
lurking inside, Huron-Bruce MP Murray Cardiff did a little politicking
with an eight-foot chicken at the Thresher reunion in Blyth last
weekend. Actually, Larry Fitchett of Windsor was his fine feathered

A shiny new architect’s model,
showing how the Huron County
Pioneer Museum will look early in
1989 when a $3.5 million recon
structionjob is completed, was
unveiled Thursday to members of
Huron County Council.
Project Director Claus Breede
told Council that many of the
museum’s artifacts had already
been moved to a storage building at
the airport in Goderich.
“During the last two weeks of
July,’’ he said, “storage racks
were constructed at the east end of
the building and the material used
in the construction was salvaged
from the exhibits on the second
floor of the museum that has now
been demolished.’’
Breede said in an interview that
the decision was made sometime
ago to retain the old Central
School, built in 1856, as the main
front entrance to the museum but
that all additions to it would be
replaced with new construction.
“We decided to make it a more
efficient building and still keep it
within the budget,’’ he said.
The result will be a museum of
37,000 square feet, a little smaller
than the original 42,000 square
feet, but there will be more
mizzanine space, he said.
Huron County has already con
tributed $550,000 during the past
two years toward the project and
will provide another $600,000
during the next two years.
The Museum Assistance Pro
gram of the National Museums of
Canada has contributed $117,000
towards the cost of all professional
fees including architectural and
engineering costs.
In addition, the Job Develop
ment program of the Department
of Manpower and Immigration has
provided a grant of $123,000. This
is being used to pay the salaries of
six people for a year to pack up the
artifacts so they can be moved to
temporary storage at the airport.
These people have been working
since the first of this year.
“We hope to go out to tender
early in 1987,’’ Breede said. “We
are estimating it will be completed
early in 1989.’’
He added that at least parts of
the museum will be open to the
public during the entire period of
construction.
Currently, a show of 400 quilts
made by area residents is on
display in the area around Phase 1
(a) demolition site.
Breede said that an application
for funding totalling $1,170,000
has been sitting in the Museum
Section of offices of the Ministry of
Citizenship and Culture for some
time.
“We are anticipating a response
regarding funding within the next
few weeks,” he said.
As soon as this grant is
confirmed, he said, additional
funding will be sought from the
federal government.
Chris Borgal, the architect who
designed the museum project,
unveiled the model for Council,
removing roof and floor sections to
show how the finished building will
look.
Council approved this revised
sketch of the front entrance which
will provide a ramped covered
walkway from Bruce St. as well as
the entrance from North St. He was
authorized to proceed with the
working drawings.
Council also approved a new
Museum logo which is in the
design of the original date stone of
the school building which forms
part of the museum.
