Eakins introduced an advanced
version of the French atelier
system into the Academy.
In 1888, Mr. Reidand his wife
travelled to Paris and joined
several other Canadian students at
the Academies Julian and Cola-
rossi, where he learned to apply the
veneer of impressionism to a firm
academic base.
In 1889, he was elected a
member of the Royal Canadian
Academy. Soon after his return to
Toronto, Mr. Reid began to teach
at the Central Ontario School of Art
and Design, where he was later
principal from 1912-18.
Busy Toronto theatre
season set to open
With close to 100 professional
theatre companies, Toronto is the
secondlargesttheatrecentre in
North America.
The fall season brings Larry
Shure’s hit comedy, The Foreign
er, to the Royal Alexandra Theatre,
Sept. 8 to Oct. 18. From Oct. 21 to
26, the Royal Alex welcomes the
90-member Berliner Ensemble on
their first North American visit.
They will perform two works in
German by Bertolt Brecht, The
Three Penny Opera and The
Caucasian Chalk Circle. A lavish
production of Gilbert and Sulli
van’s Mikado follows, from Nov. 4
to Dec. 13.
The Canadian Opera Company
opens its season on Sept. 12 with
the pageantry and grandeur of
Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, a
historical drama based on the 17th
century Tsar Boris. Verdi’s Mac
beth opens Sept. 19 and alternates
with Godunov until Oct. 4.
Canada’s favorite musical,
Anne of Green Gables, is at the
O’Keefe Centre from Oct. 6 to 18.
The title of the exhibition,
Sympathetic Realism, refers to a
term used by a contemporary
reviewer in 1895 to describe Mr.
Reid’s large-scale gentre scenes,
which almost always tell a moving,
moral tale.
This type of picture, which later
fell out of favor, enjoyed tremen
dous popularity in the late 19th
century.
Mr. Reid has always had a
special place in the history of the
Art Gallery of Ontario. He was part
of that group of enlightened men,
whoinl910, formed a committee to
establish the first permanent art
gallery in Toronto, the Art Mus
eum of Toronto, now AGO.
Also at the O’Keefe, the National
Ballet of Canada opens with The
Merry Widow, Nov. 8 to 16,
followed by Giselle Nov. 20 to 30.
