That is not to say that there is no benefit whatever in recited prayers, choral anthems and congregational re sponses; in fact, the whole effect People around Ethel Gary and Beth Earl and family attended the wedding of Ian and Brenda Mac Hattie at Erin. The reception was held at the chicken barn on the bride’s parents farm. On Sunday, Gary and Beth visited at the home of Rick and Mary Earl of Guelph, then visited Warren and Corrine Smith at Cambridge before returning home. Children of the community are invited to attend the Ethel Sunday School beginning September 7. Barbara Grube, Mildred Gill, Margaret McMahon, Thelma Kef fer and Doris Jacklin attended the 30th Anniversary of the Walton Women’s Institute and took part in their program. Helen Dobson, an avid gardener took first place in the Arrange ments Class at the recently held Brussels Horticultural Society’s Summer Flower Show. A good crowd was in attendance for the “buck and doe” held Friday evening for Kevin Bishop and can be beautiful and worshipful. One can come away from such an experience, however, feeling that God is stuck in the stained glass. Liturgy serves to remind us of the transcendence of God, of His remoteness, but when I leave a Sunday service, I need to know that God goes home with me for lunch, Jacquie Robertson whose marri agewilltakeplace on September 6. Cindy Purvis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Purvis, Ethel will be a contestant in the Brussels “Queen of the Fair” competition being heldon September 13. She is being sponsored by the Ethel Women’s Institute. Beth Earl and Joan Smith are going to be the 4-H Leaders for the upcoming club “Milk Makes It.” Any girls interested in taking the 4-H Club are asked to contact either leader. Sympathy is extended to the John and Helen Brink family in the passing of daughter Marion Brink. Many little people will be attending school for the first time next Tuesday. Please drive care fully and watch for the flashing lights of school buses. Our young people are our greatest asset. Robert, Bev and Melissa Storer injured in a traffic accident are beginning to recover and we wish them all a speedy one. as Jesus did with Zacchaeus, and, come Monday, that He puts on w'ork clothes and participates in my life. Some people do not want God to be that personal or that involved, of course. They want to find Him simply in His accustomed place over the altar or in the stained glass window when they return to church the following Sunday. Instead of stately prayers, offer ed in stentorian tones, I much prefer the forthright approach of a young layman upon whom evange- list Duncan Campbell called to pray when revival meetings in the New Hebrides Islands were bogg ed down. He prayed something like this: ‘‘0 Lord, You promised to pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; now do it, Lord, or we will never be able to trust You again.” No liturgical prayer that, but God seems to have been pleased with it, for, immedi ately, an earthquake occurred which sent people streaming into the church, and revival was on. The Bible describes God as being active and involved in human affairs. He said to Moses, “I have indeed seen the misery of My people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about the suffering. So I have come down to rescue them... and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land ...” (Ex. 3:7,8) The Psalmist celebrates also the involvement of God in the deliver ance of Israel when he writes, ‘‘Come and see what God has done, how awesome His works in man’s behalf! He turned the sea into dry land, they passed through the river on foot ...” (Psalm 66:5,6.) Can one expect that God will stuck in stained career. In despair, she stood in front of the bathroom sink, razor blade poised to cut her wrists, when the phone began to ring She paid no attention, but it continued hear his prayers and that He will ‘‘come down to rescue” him? David the Psalmist thought so. He writes, “Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what He has done for me. I cried out to Him with my mouth; His praise was on my tongue. If 1 had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; but God has surely listened; and heard my voice in prayer.” (Psalm 66: 16-19.) Dan, the young son-in-law of a ministerial associate of mine, could well borrow that testimony of David. While still in his 20’s, with a wife and small children, he heard the doctor’ s doleful words: ‘ ‘ Sorry, you have an inoperable cancer, and we can hold out to you no hope.’ To-day, Dan is cancer-free. 1 don’t know what changed in order to make possible the subsequent surgery, but an impossible situa tion has been reversed and Dan is rejoicing in what God has done for him. The voice of a friend went on to tell her how God had prompted him to call incessantly and to say those words. That afternoon, Joyce Landorf. the daughter of a Christian minister, repented of her sins and found her father’s God. Joyce’s husband, meanwhile, was brooding over his desk at work. He was as bitter and discouraged as his wife, but while he was thinking dark thoughts, he nas moved to get down on his knees and to cry out to God. That evening the Landorfs, each a transformed person, had a story to tell of God’s intervening grace. Don’t leave God bound in the Bible and confined in church and liturgy. He is at work; He has come down to rescue. BUSINESS DIRECTORY Dave’s Car Oiling Drummond St. E. Blyth 523-4343 Hood— Trunk Lid Bill Bromley Electric LONDESBORO j^jl PHONE523-4506 LI 1-800-265-9255 I.
