Winona Martin returns from tour of the Orient Mrs. Winona Martin has return ed from a 29-day tour from Toronto toL. A., Japan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Napel and Bang- daleah. “We were on and off planes 37 times, had several cruises, and many motor coach tours,’’ she said. All the cities visited had interest- ing tours of especially temples, pagodas and mosques (where shoes must be removed). “The country side was viewed as we drove 15 to 30 miles from the airportto the hotels. The hotels were beyond expectation, where the service was most gracious and even trying to eat with chopsticks was something else. “In Tokyo we had a 90 miles trip to the Niko National Park through very high mountains and hair pin turns to a shrine. “Shanghai is China’s largest city. We visited a Commune which is self-sufficient. Fifteen to 21 course meals are common. We enjoyed a 30-kilometer ride on the Hwang-ho River. “Peking, the Forbidden City, is massive. Walking on the Great Wall of China was the thrill of a lifetime.’’ Ixian is noted for the excavation of the life size terra cotta warriors guarding the emperor’s tomb, when the roof collapsed. Guangzhou (Canton), has silk, ceramic and jade factories. It is where the famous Mr. Sun started the democracy for China. “Hong Kong, a British posses sion, is to be handed back to China about 1999 so many people are leaving. It is famous for Tiger Balm Garden Repulse Bay. We had a Sunset Cruise to the Jumbo Floating Restaurant which was attractive and expensive,’’ Mrs. Martin said. ‘ Tn Bangkok we were treated to a boat cruise on the klongs where houses are built on the river’s edge. In the evening we had a teakwood cruise and observed many temples and housing. The famous Jade BuddaTemple is here and many other gold and jewelled buildings. The highlight to me was a boat ride on the River Kwai where many soldiers were imprisoned by the Japanese during World War II. The British captives were forced to build a bridge over the River Kwai so the Japanese could transport forces to Burma. I even got on the railway bridge. The British were brutally treated - those of you who have seen the movie The Bridge on the River Kwai will understand this situation. “The people all over are either very very poor or rich. “In Delhi there are many temples, Ghandi’s monument and cremation grounds. “In Srinagar, in the north, we went across Dal Lake in shikara boats to House Boat Motels, adornedbybeautiful carivings. There were three famous Mogul Gardens as well as carpet and machine factories. Many salesmen with Kashmir wool products, jewellery and wood machine arti cles visited the Boat Houses pressing us to buy. In the evening we had a cruise along the canal where the workers lived and gardened. “We flew back to Delhi and toured again. Then on to Jaipur where it was 115 degrees at the Palace Hotel. We saw a typical Indian Wedding here, called the pink city. The Palace of the Winds was built in 1728 of gray material, but in 1883 was painted pink to honour the visit of Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria. ‘ * Agra is noted for the wonderful Ta-Mahal, one of the seven wondersofthe ancient world. It was built by Sha Johan (1631 to 1648 -18 years to build) because he loved his wife so much. She died at the age of 39 during the birth of their 13th child. “We drove to Fatephur Sikri which is a deserted city with old palace buildings etc. “In Varanasi we had an early boat cruise on the Ganges River. We saw many old buildings, bathers on the ghats, women washing on rock washboards, cremations going on in early morning, monkspraying, Brah mins, a dead body floating in the river etc. Many people live in poor looking boats on the river. There are bathroom stations on the shore for them. There are also houses on the shore. * * In Kathamndu in Nepal we saw the majestic Himalaya Mountains at a closer range. There were many temples with rather strange carv ings. The deep valleys had terrac ed hillsides and the work was done by hand. We rode on the noted “Hillary’s Road” to a restaurant “On top of the World”. Kathamn du was highly decorated because the President of India was coming to visit the city. “In Bangladesh we saw the brave and savage soldiers of Dakka. ‘ ‘This was a most interesting trip where we learned about the different cultures, education, reli gion, medical approach, govern ment, language, methods in agri culture, marriage arrangements, several monetary units, factories, foods, temples galore, oldfortsand castles almost too much to compre hend. “There were 29 on the tour. At Bangkok, 14 left for Singapore and Brussels 4-H club s+udies weeds BY KIM MCWHIRTER Brussels 1,4H club held its third meeting at the home of Barb Graber on June 11. The members opened their meeting with the 4H pledge, then answered roll call with many interesting questions. The leaders went on to discuss weeds and how to control them. Insects were also discussed as were plant diseases. Companion planting was dis cussed and members were inform ed what plants and vegetables should be planted beside each other. at airports. Of course each city had its own personal guide who was very well read and spoke excellent English.” 15wenton toIndiaTour.
