From the Minister's Study BYDONR.VAIR PASTOR, WESTFIELD FELLOWSHIP HOUR Each of us has known what it is to be very hungry and thirsty. We hear our children say “I can’t wait for supper, I’m starved,” even though they ate well at lunchtime. Oh how delicious a meal tastes when we feel hunger pangs. Oh how good is a cold glass of water on a hot day after some hard work, a hike, or a rigorous game of baseball. As real as our hunger and thirst is, it seems small when viewed against the backdrop of those familiar scenes of starving men, women and children in Africa, brought directly into our living rooms via television. Physical hunger and thirst is real! If prolonged, it can result in a most horrible suffering and death. There is another type of hunger and thirst that is even more intense, and if not satisfied, is more tragic in its results. A man or woman may be finely dressed and overfed, yet suffer this kind of hunger, for it is spiritual in nature. It has been said that there is a god-shaped space within each human being that can only be filled with nothing less than God him self, in Jesus Christ. It is sad but true that most people try to fill that emptiness with everythingbuttherightthing, with the end result that nothing truly and lasting satisfies. Isaiah wrote these words in Isaiah 55: ‘‘Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come to the waters, and he that hath no money, come buy andeat.Yea come buy wine and milk without money and without Food and drink for thirsty souls price. Why do we spend money for that which is not bread? And your labour for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat that which is good, and let your soul delight itself and fat ness.” In John, chapter four, we have the account of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Jesus said unto her ‘‘Whosoever Blyth United hears of Bible Society Rev. Wallace Howlett from the London Branch of the Canadian Bible Society was special speaker at Blyth United Church on Sunday. But the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into ever lastin life.” In John, chapter six, we hear Jesus offering Himself as the only food and drink to satisfy the deepest longing of the human spirit. Verse 35 says ‘‘And Jesus Rev. Howlett gave a very interesting account of some of the work of the Society. He said ‘‘There is a tremendous demand Friends were received at the Peebles Funeral Home, 141 John St., Atwood where a funeral service was held on Aug. 12 with Rev. He that cometh to me shall never hunger and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” In John, chapter ten, Jesus says ‘ ‘.... I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.” Are you hungering and thirsting in the deepest depths of your inner self? Jesus Christ who died and rose again stands knocking at your for scriptures in Third World countries.” He told of the Amity Printing Press being built by the United Bible Societies in the People Republic of China. It is hoped it will be ready early in 1987. It will have a capacity to print 250,000 Bibles and 500,000 New Testaments annually as well as other Christian literature. There is a great need for bibles in China today as new churches are being opened every day. 1 Blyth Christian ® Reformed Church HIGHWAY4, BLYTH Rev.
