This week we would like to pay tribute to our Brussels Legion Pipe Band. From their first parade down the main street of Brussels in May, 1953, the Pipe Band has come a long way. They are a popular attraction at church parades, centennials, fairs, legion parades and even at a few weddings. The Band started in 1952 with 12 members who were all veterans. They supplied their own instru ments and paid for their own lessons. The membership has Brussels squirt girls win tournament BY BONNIE JACKLIN AND BRIAN AND MARLENE RUTLEDGE The Brussels Squirt Girls ball team had an exhausting weekend at a round robin tournament played in Wingham for the Tri-county championship. At 9 Saturday they played Atwood and won quite easily with a score of 21 - 2. At 1 p.m. they outplayed Belmore winning by 23 - 6. After a 20 minute break they had a tougher game with Wingham I. The score was 11-5. With three wins to their advant age it was back to Brussels for a refreshing swim and a barbecue before they went home to rest up for Sunday. Starting at 3 p.m. Sunday they took on the Wingham II team. It was a tight game but they managed to win 18 - 12. The girls took advantage of the mere 30 minute break before they had to play Gowanstown. Both teams had not lost a game, so the winner’s would take the tournament. It was a very close game with the score see-sawing back and forth for the first three innings then Brus sels began to make use of their bats and held the lead until the seven innings were played. The final scorewasBrussels 17, Gowans town, 8. It was a hard fought victory and the coaches and parents were very proud of the girls. The team consisted of Bobbi Jo Rutledge, Sharie Jacklin, Michelle Machan, Carrie Cooper, Amy Albrecht, Krista Hasting, Chan- telle Stephenson, Nicki Gropp, Tammy Rose, Hope Jacobs and absent for the tournament Kelly Overholt. grown to 18 members and 6 new members are taking, lessons from band members. Membership in the Pipe Band is open to anyone interested in joining the band. Uniforms and drums are supplied by the band. The people of Standish, Michi gan were so impressed with our Pipe Band when they accompanied Wingham that they asked Brussels to be their Sister City to ensure that the Pipe Band would attend their annual Loyalty Day Parade. Each year they have the Pipe Band entertain during their Loyalty Day Dance. This year they taped their During the tournament the girls scored90runs, 11 ofwhichwere home runs. Their season record was nine wins and one loss. The coaches would like to thank the girls for giving us their best during the tournament and throughout the year. They never once complained about the heat or the gruelling pace of the weekend. Those muscle sore and tired girls deserved to win and they can be very proud of their sportsmanship andplayingabilities. We would also like to thank the parents and other fans who supported us. A special thanks is sent to two familiesfor changing plans and rules to let their daughters play. One more big thanks from the girls parents and coaches goes to John Exel for letting us have a victory ride on the fire truck.
