Cattle prices higher at Brussels Stockyards The market at Brussels stock- yards traded at higher prices on a good supply of cattle. All weights of feeder pigs sold steady to higher. There were 809 cattle and 484 pigs on offer. Choice steers sold from $82.50 to $86.50 with a sale at $90.50 per hundredweight. Good steers were $78.50 to $82.50. A steer consigned by Keith Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale weighing 1190 lbs. topped the market at $90.50 with his offering of 24 steers averaging 1187 lbs. selling for an overall price of $85.62. Thirty-two steers consign­ ed by Murray Forbes of RR 2, Clinton averaging 1205 lbs. sold for an overall price of $86.65 with sales to $89.25. Twenty steers consigned by Ken McClinchey of RR 3, Parkhill averaging 1252 lbs. sold for an overall price of $85.77 with sales to $87.25. Good cows were $49 to $52. Canners and cutters were $44 to $49. Heavy bulls sold to a high of $73.25. Pigs under 30 lbs. traded to a high of $1.60 per lb.; 30 to 40-1 b. pigs to ahigh of $1.39; 40 to 50-lb. pigs to a high of $1.34; 50 to 60-lb. pigs to a high of $1.23; 60 to 70-lb. pigs to a high of $1.15; 70 to 80-lb. pigs to a high of $1.13 per lb. On Wednesday, August 20, the Huron Soil Conservation District will be holding Soil Conservation Day. The theme of this years event is “Conservation Farming - Putt­ ing our Future on Solid Ground.’’ Conservation Day will give farmers a chance to view a variety of soil conservation demonstra­ tions on the host farm of Gordon Lobb. Guest speakers will include the Honourable Senator H.O. Sparrow, Chairman of the Stand­ ing Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, that pro­ duced a soil conservation report, “Soil at Risk’’, in 1984. The tour will include erosion control structures, tillage equip­ ment and practices, herbicide trials and reforestation. John Schwindt, Conservation Services Co-ordinator with the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority, will speak on the role of trees and reforestation in soil conservation. Bob Debradendene, a Perth County farmer, will discuss the development of his own conservation farming techniques. Other speakers will also be present to share their knowledge of soil conservation. The public is invited to the event. It will be held beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the farm of Gordon Lobb, 1 Vi miles west of Clinton on Highway 8. Just follow the signs to the site.
