HURON DA Y CENTRE FOR THE HOMEBOUND
(Clinton), 482-7943
For nine years, the Huron Day Centre for the
Homebound has catered to the needs of senior citizens
throughout Huron County. The Clinton centre now assists
approximately 16 seniors a day and isopen four days a
week. The purpose of the centre is to provide social,
educational and recreational activity for those in Huron
County who are homebound by reason of age and/or
disability who wish to continue their independence of using
their own homes as an alternative to institutional care.
The Huron Day Centre is currently financed on a 50-50
basis by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social
Services, the Huron County Council, client fees, sale of
crafts and various other fundraising activities, along with
donations.
The client fee is $6.50 per day of attendance which
includes a nutritious noon meal, transportation and the
activity programs.
Rosemary Armstrong, who has been the co-ordinator for
the past seven years, says they offer exercise programs,
discussion periods, sing-songs, a whirlpool bath, crafts,
games, barbeques, films and a foot care clinic along with
many other activities.
For seniorstobecomemembers, eitherahome care
referral or a self referral is needed. Mrs. Armstrong then
visits with the seniors with family members present if
possible, and discusses what is offered.
Currently there are 55 volunteers, along with one
full-time and five part-time staff who work with the clients.
Each of the staff is made aware of needed medication of
clients, health problems, and symptoms to be aware of that
could lead up to a seizure or related attack. All the staff is
trained for emergency purposes. “We have the best
volunteers in Huron County”, at the day centre, says Mrs.
Armstrong, adding that there are some who have been
working there for eight years.
The Stroke Recovery Club is a newer addition to the
centre, with special therapy, socialization and mutual
support to those clients who have suffered strokes.
