BYTHE REV. BONNIE LAMBLE WALTON-BLUEVALE PASTORAL CHARGE “And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earth quake a fire, b ut the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11, 12 RSV) In this passage, the prophet Elijah speaks about the wind, the earthquake and the fire. It seems to me that these can be metaphors for our lives today. The wind is a great and strong one that split the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces. One translation calls it a hurricane. It seems to me that many ofour lives are like a great whirlwind. We race from one activity to another. It almost seems like our homes have revolving doors as we tear in and out. After the wind there was an earthquake. None of us can expect to go through life without some earth shattering experiences, times when our lives seem to be crumbling before our eyes. Illness, death, loss of job, marriage breakdown, financial losses, a series of reversals can really devastate our lives. When these things hit us there seems to be no solid ground under our feet, no safe place of refuge. After the wind there was fire. We recognize the experience of a trial by fire. We suddenly are hit by a whole series of demands upon us. We are not sure how we are going to get through it all. But we attempt to try, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Sometimes the fire results in burnout. Worn out by constant activity and giving to others and forgetting to take time to care for ourselves, we get worn out. Our own resources are depleted and we find ourselves with nothing to offer anyone, and with no means of renewing our own tired selves. When the wind, earthquake and fire hit our lives, we may have the same experience as Elijah. God is not in the wind. God is not in the earthquake. God is not in the fire. At least that is the way it may seem to us. Elijah encountered God in a still small voice; nothing big, nothing dramatic. Something we could easily miss in the noise and confusion ofour lives. Do you take the time to listen for that still small i Bly th Christian ® Reformed Church HIGHWAY4, BLYTH Rev. ALL VISITORS WELCOME voice? Wouldyou recognize it if you heard it? One of the things we do in worship is pray. We do a fair bit of praying. We have prayers of approach, confession and dedica tion; we pray for grace, offer thanksgiving and our concerns for others. But in all that praying we are talking to God, not listening. If prayer isconversation with God then we need to be doing some listening. But our models of public prayer don’t emphasize enough the listening aspect of prayer. We get little practice in listening for the still, small voice. But it’s often in the listening to God that we receive strength and guidance. When we enter into prayer something happens. Prayer changes us. True prayer that is. Forwhen we speak to God and then listen for the still small voice, the encounter with the Divine puts its mark upon us. The still small voice speaks.
