Programs at the Wawanosh
Valley Conservation Education
Centre in 1985-86 saw 2,500
children visiting the Centre during
the school year.
The Centre, which offers a
variety of conservation education
programs in fall. winter and spring
has hosted schools from the Huron
County Board of Education and
Huron-Perth Separate School
Board.
The Wawanosh Centre is located
southwest of Belgrave, on the
Maitland River. It is operated by
the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority.
Classes visiting the site can
choose one of a number of
programs from sensory hikes for
the young, to indepth forest
management and stream studies
for older students.
Stream studies were very popu
lar with teachers and students this
spring. Students explored a sec
tion of the Belgrave Creek to search
for its inhabitants; fish, turtles,
frogs, crayfish and a variety of
insects. The captured inhabitants
were examined and released. In
the process students learn about
life in a stream, food chains and
how man’s activities can affect
water quality. Debra Perkin, Con
servation Education Technician for
the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority conducts the programs
and is assisted by Diane Lalonde.
“We want children to be
comfortable in the outdoors and
gain an appreciation and aware
ness of our natural environment,’’
said Miss Perkin.
“Through these activities the
children also become more know
ledgeable about the environment,
and the need to manage natural
resources. We dothis by having
‘hands on' activities where the
students learn by doing’ ’ she said.
The programs are designed to
reflect and enhance what the
children study in the classroom.
The Wawanosh Valley Conser
vation Area is an ideal place for
learning about the outdoors. The
property has 400 acres of rolling
hills, natural hardwood forest and
coniferous plantation. A classroom
facility wassetup on the site in
1984 when an initial pilot project
was offered to several classes from
watershed schools.
