Society holds picnic On Monday afternoon, July 14, the Brussels and District Horticul­ tural Society held its annual picnic, this year in the East Wawanosh Conservation Area park. Eighteen members enjoyed a beautiful afternoon beside the water follow­ ed by a bounteous supper. A short business session was conducted by the president, Alice McArter. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were given and itwas moved by Luella Mitchell that the treasurer, Jean Bewley, be empowered to re-invest the $200 in memory of Margaret Tyerman as she sees fit and that the interest be used for the Junior Competition at the August Flower Show. Plaques were given out for the most points at the Rose Show, first, Isobel Gibson with 29 points; , second, Jane White with 28 points -and third Helen Dobson with 27 points. Four new members were added making a membership of 38 and this has since been increased to 40. The club needs 50 members in order to get the grant from the Government. Memberships cost only one dollar. Meetings are held on the second Monday of every other month. The next meeting will be on September 8th at 8 o’clock in the library. The August Flower Show and supper will be held on August 13th in the Anglican Church between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. EXPOasOfficial Supplier to The 1986 World Exposition SPECTACULAR arouna Brussels Marilyn Higgins 887-6754 Mr. Lome McCracken of Blue­ vale visited with his sister Mrs. Lila Goll over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Andy Gray of Milverton visited at the same home Saturday evening. Congratulationsto Nanci and Greg Ducharme who were married in Duff’s United Church, Walton on Saturday, July 19. We are sorry to hear that Mr. Lome Dale is a patient in Univer­ sity Hospital, London. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Kellington of Guelph spent the weekend with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kellington. Brian was the best man for the Bennett-Ducharme wedd­ ing. Mrs. Dorothy Higgins and Mrs. Glenna Stephens have returned home from their cottage at Red Bay, Lake Huron where they have been holidaying. A 25th anniversary party was held at the home of Mrs. Lila Goll on Sunday, July 20for Jack and Marilyn Higgins. They received many lovely gifts and enjoyed a delicious supper. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Goll, Mr. and Mrs. Stan Moffat and Mr. Lome Mc­ Cracken of Bluevale, Mr. and Mrs. Alvie Higgins, Mr. and Mrs. Mel McArter, Doug, Kevin and Brian, Ken Higgins, Leanne and Melissa Wissler of Brussels. Lois and Mel were also celebrating their 27th anniversary and Kevin McArter and Lome McCracken were cele­ brating their birthdays. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Whelan owling Club hosts to area bowlers The Brussels Lawn Bowling Club held a mixed trebles tourna­ ment on the Brussels greens Saturday, July 19. The very hot humid weather resulted in two cancellations but seven greens were filled. Players came from Atwood, Mitchell, Seaforth, Clin- involved in this excellent sport. The club would be pleased to see any new faces on Monday or Thursday evenings. Next Thurs­ day, July 24, the club will bowl for the Jack Yuill and Jim Mair trophies at 4 p.m. with a pot luck supper between games. and son Francis from Lucan, Mrs. Clara Haig (Russell) and daughter Mrs. Tony Martin and son Dale, Calgary and Mrs. Fred Haig and daughter Roseanne, Kitchener recently visited with Mrs. John Kelly. On Sunday, July 13, many friends and relatives joined Roy Cousins to help celebrate his 80th birthdayatan “open house’’ in the Brussels United Church. Mr. Cousins (formerly of Brussels) and his wife Reta of Newmarket and his family, LawrieandPieta of Lon­ don, Betty and Ivan, George and Emily, and John and Merle all of Brussels welcomed the guests. His granddaughters Cathy, Janette, Julie, Debbie, Gwen and Laura served lunch at individual tea tables. Pouring tea were Phillis Beacom, Hazel Matheson and Ruth Hupfer, assisted in the kitchen by Sarah Stephenson and Luella Mitchell. During the party, Alice Brothers and Freda Pipe entertained the guests with their toe-tapping piano duets Following the “open house’’ a family party took place at Johh and Merle’s home with relatives atten­ ding from Kitchener, Rexdale, Toronto, Thornhill, Oshawa, Brad­ ford, Bond Head, Richmond Hill and London. A family portrait taken near the Brussels Maitland River was pre­ sented to Mr. Cousins for his birthday by his family of children, 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. For many years he owned and operated the Brussels Creamery and Dairy. Robinson from Mitchell was second; George Inglis from Brus­ sels was third; Jack Broyton from Atwood was fourth; Art Finlayson from Seaforth was fifth; Ted Holman from Atwood was sixth; Bill Hewitt from Atwood was seventh; and Stewart Bryans from Mitchell won the consolation.
