Debentures for new arena
(Continued from Page 1)
Reeve McCutcheon said that if
the ' public canvass wasn't
successful he thought the arena
committe-eWould look carefully at
whether or not to proceed.
Reeve McCutcheon assured the
meeting that Brussels council is
behind the new arena committee
"100 percent. The site, as far as
I'm concerned, has been
accepted."
There has been some contro-
versy about the arena site, in the
south east corner of the village,
with some people, including the
reeve, originally, favouring a site
at the Brussels fairgrounds.
Because the arena committee
felt there was a duplication of
costs, Mr. Prior said they have
severed their connection with
Piersoti Buildings Ltd., after
paying $5000 for preliminary
drawings. He said the committee
hopes to tender on the pre-
engineered steel building. For
technical advice, they have
retained B.M. Ross and
Associates of Goderich, to
oversee construction. To continue
with Pierson would have cost
about $30,000, Mr. Prior said.
The $600,000 figure for the new
arena includes property, access,
the ice plant, parking and the
building, which will have the ice
surface, an auditorium and
dressing rooms all on one floor.
Clearing up some confusion in
the arena brochure in last week's
Post, Mr. Prior assured the
meeting that there will be only
one auditorium, more than twice
the size of the Legion which will
hold about 400 people, according
to L.C.B.O. regulations.
In answer to a question from
Murray Bray, Mr. Prior said an
elevator was included in the plans
so that handicapped and elderly
people will have access to a
second floor viewing area over the
ice surface. "We hope everybody
can use the arena," he said.
Reeve McCutcheon commented
that making provision for the
handicapped in public buildings
is going to become regulation
shortly, "Now is the time to do
it," he said,.
Jack Bryans and. Reeve
McCutcheon both expressed
concern about the fact that only
about 40 people attended the
meeting. "Does lack of attend-
ance mean support or are people
talking against it (the new arena)
on the street corners?", the
Reeve asked. Most of those at the
meeting appeared to be in favour
of the new building, but they had
questions about details.
Many agreed with Mr. Bryans
when he said "it's got to be done
for the good of the Brussels
area." He pointed out. that more
than half a million dollars was
being spent and the committee
had to look far ahead.
"I can't see us sitting back and
not building an arena when
grants are the way they are now,'
commented Gordan Workman.
$150,000 for the new building
should come in grants under the
Community Centres Act, Mr.
Prior said. Wintario will pay $2
for every $1 raised locally up to
the estimated cost of repairing
the old arena. That money can be
applied to building the new one
and then on the balance of the
cost, Wintario will donate $1 for
every $1 raised locally. Total
Wintario grants should be
$187,500.
. If $150,000 is raised -locally, the
new arena will qualify for
$187,500, Mr. Prior said in
answer to a question about
whether the whole $237,500 has
to be raised in order to get the
Wintario funds.
Grey township councillor Barb
Dunbar asked about proposed
operating costs at the new arena.
Committee chairman Prior said
that although they'll be up, it is
expected, that income from the
new arena will also increase. In
Tharnesford, where there's
similar arena, they found that
income was above operating costs
after a. year.
Mrs. Dunbar replied, that
perhaps Thamesford was a differ-
ent sort of community than
Brussels.
Arena
(Continued from Page 1)
seriously questioned the
advisability of repairing the old
arena, built in 1931, he said.
"People should know that the
old., arena is only open by grace,
because a new one is being
built," said Rev. Ken Innes, a
member of the audience.

councillor, says he will run for
office again.He's been on council
for about 10 years and says he
hasn't heard any word on whether.
or not there will be an election.
The entire McKillop council
was acclaimed to office two years
ago.
Art Anderson, a McKillop
councillor for• eight years, says
he's still undecided about
running again. The& has been
quite a bit of pressure on him to
run for reeve but "I don't have
time for that," Mr Anderson said.
He commented that although
he's enjoyed his years on council,
it's difficult ' to get to night
meetings when he has cows to
milk first.
