NIT BLYTH Phone 523 4241 rrtimat4an:Atiiii, Report from Queen's Park Legislature is busy. ti , [By Murray Gaunt, M.P.P. for Huron Bruce] The Legislature reconvened this week in what was one of the busiest days ever in the Ontario Legislature. The Government kicked the whole thing off by introducing a dozen pieces of neW legislation. After it was over, the Government had promised new deals for partners whose marriages fail, for miners involved in dangerous work, and for farmers through the revised Farm Income Protection Bill. Under the Farm Bill there are a number of significant changes over the bill which was defeated last June. The plan is now voluntary; it will cover all farm products and will be financed by a 1/3 contribution from farmers and a 2/3 contribution from the Government. It is expected to cost the Government between 60 and 70 million. For the most part the payout will be made to those who join the plan if the average price of a product drops below the average price over the last five years, and the payment will be based on 95% of that average five-year price. This applies to products named under the Federal. Stabilization Bill. For those products n of so named the payment will be less. The family law proposals legalilze marriage contracts to define property rights and the care of children. Further, there are guarantees that in case of marriage breakdown the family assets, such as house and car, be shared equally by both partners. It is now proposed that workers can refuse to work in unsafe conditions - a right demanded for some time by organized labour. A single, centralized occupational health and safety division will be created within the Labour Ministry, which will allow for the formation of labour- management safety committees on work sites. Solicitor General John MacBeth plans to establish a province-wide tribunal to hear citizen complaints against policemen. The tribunal would b e independent of the police. Mr. MacBeth expects the tribunal to be functioning in early 1977. The rate of disqualification for recipients of Ontario first-time home buyer grants is running as high as 10.7%, according to Revenue Minister Arthur Meen. To October 22, a total of 1,016 grants were disallowed. Mr.' Meen confirmed that the audit of grants will terminate at the end of this year when only 15,000 , or about 17%investigated. (By Bill Broadworth, Associate Agr. Rep. for Huron County) The production potential of a dairy herd is equal to the genes comprising the genetic level of the herd. Simply, the better the genetic level - the better the production potential. Successful athletic teams have top notch scouts, owners, mana- gers and coaches. Scouts, mana- gers and owners recruit and sign talented players.' The coaches 'must create a system to have the players ekpress their -talent. It's no different on the dairy, farm except the dairyman, is often the scout, manager, owner and coach when it comes to breeding management. He must recruit superior genes and manage his genetic ..potential to realize the production potential of his herd. The secret is how to use the available information in sire The market at Brussels Stockyards was higher on choice steers on Friday and steady on heifers. Pigs sold higher. There were 1310 cattle and 982 pigs on offer, Choice Steers - 41.50 to 43.50 with sales to 44.00. Good. Steers - 39.00 to 41.00. Ten steers consigned by Ronald Wolfe of Dot)bington averaging 1136 lbs. sold for 44.00 with his 25 steers averaging 1141 lbs. selling for 43.65. Four steers consigned by Alex Nivens of R.R.3, Auburn averaging 1170 lbs. sold for 43.75. Four steers consigned by Hilray Farms of Holyrood averaging 1170 lbs. sold for 43.40 with their 14 steers averaging 1211 lbs. selling for close to 43.00. Seven steers consigned by Gordon Schweitzer of Elmira averaging 1207 lbs. sold for 43.00 selection. Individual A.I. sire catalogues, dairy cattle special- ists, Ministry of Agriculture and Food personnel can provide help in sire selection. Breed Associa- tions have fieldmen who are quite familiar with available sires. Do not neglect farm magazines, particularly Hoard's Dairymen. HoWever, it seems the big problem is not how to use A.I. but rather whether or not to use A.I. sires. The proven sires are available through A.I. units. It's amazing just.how many unproven bulls occupy space in many dairy barns. Reasons given for not using A.I. generally reveal such dairymen are having breeding problems, haven't really thought of using A.I. or this year = are trying to cut costs. These may seem very. legitimate reasons for the individual dairymen. How- ever, the simple fact is that most .very successful dairymen use A.I. with his top steer selling for 43.75. Nine steers consigned by john n M. Perrie of Brussels averaging 1101 lbs sold for 43.25 with his71. steers averaging 1131 lbs. selling for 42.18. Ten steers consigned by Dr, Howard Kleiman of Wroxeter averaging 1137 lbs. sold for 42.80. There were no fancy heifers on offer. ' Good „heifers traded for 36.00 to 38.00. Choice Cows - 21.00 to 23.00. Good 'Cows - 18.00 to 21.00. Bulls traded to 27,75 with feed lot bulls bringing 39.00, 30 to 40-lb pigs traded to a high of 31.25. 40 to 50-lb. pigs to a high of 38.00. 50 to 60 - lb. pigs to a high of 41.50. 60 - 70 lb. pigs to a high of 43.75. with quite good success. In most cases the above reasons indicate the problem is management not A.I. This year, some dairymen have quit using A.I. as a way of cutting .costs. Such a management decision is questionable. The simple chore of telephoning the A.I. office to request a proven bull for use in the herd is easy. It's the surest way of improving the genetic level in the dairy herd. To replace A.I. with an unproven bull is questionable management and could be disastrous. Good dairymen continually strive to improve the genetic level in their herds. Intelligent sire selection is essential for genetic improvement. The best sire selection involves using sires available through A.I. units. Don't neglect sound breeding management.
