Vandalism is costly
Hallowe'en. Hallowe'en - the annual frolic of the
spooks and spirits - is this weekend, and according .to
some usually reliable informed sources, this year is
apt to be a three-night hoot. Why? 'Well, there's
something about a weekend that brings out, the.devil
in rabble-rousers.
According to Jim Britnell, Huron county Road
Engineer, Hallowe'en only serves as an excuse for
what goes on all around the county from January to
December. He's expecting a rash of vandalism this
weekend because of Hallowe'en, but he doesn't dare
o hope the activities of vandals will be contained in
That one event. '
Mr. Britnell says the vandalism where HUion
county roads are concerned, is caused ty,"children
)f all-ages". Some people just never grow up. Age
alone doesn't make a male child a man .., or a, female'
offspring a woman.
During the past few months, 400 cedar sign posts
lave been destroyed throughout Huron County. Of
nese, 90 per cent were levelled at the hands of
'children" posing as adults. At a replacement cost
)f from $15 to $50 per post, the bill to entertain these
children" is no laughing natter.
But even the cost could be met by the men and
.,vomen of this county who take life seriously enough
o work hard and pay their , taxes. 'The greatest
ragecry, though, is when missing signs leave' the
driving public unprotected from hazards on the road.
Mr. Britnell recounted a Hallowe'en episode near
Brussels some time ago when a road check revealed
sign post intact at 3 a.m.. Between that hour and
;t:30 a.m., however, the sign was removed. At 7:32.-
an accident occurred at that intersection which
sent three people to hospital, all seriously injured. A
sinister prank to be certain. No joke to that' mangled
trio.
Mr. Britnell is right. Huron cannot keep road
patrols out on every mile of highway for two or three
nights this weekend. It would just not be practical.
All that can be done is to plead with anyone who
sees this editorial, to think before acting and to
encourage those around to think, too. Hallowe'en is
fun for children - but some "children" n eed to grow
up and act their ages. — SJK

Finished.' I'm sorry it had 'to end this way.
But that's the way things go.
There's no use carrying on. 'As Gordon
Lightfoot sings in his song, "I don't-know
where we went wrong, but the feeling's
gone."
That says it• all, Pepper. The feeling's
gone.
In other words, you re plant nuisance.
A pest. A big bothgrionie pest -of a cat.
1:It wasn't always that, way. There vyas a
tithe, Pepper, when you'd climb up the
back screen door and hang 'there like a
monkey. I'd laugh and think you were cute.
;Now all I see is the holes your claws leave
the 'screen.
There was a time when I thought you
yere clever -- sneaking past me and
,lipping inside the house before I hardly
cracked the door open. Now you're.. just
',old and cheeky.
I used to marvel at._ your mousing
.techniques. You were the best over. Now I
figure you're just like any other cat. Every
at mouses. That's what they have eyes
and ears and claws for.
And your kittens -- your kittens, Pepper.
['here was a time when I liked your babies.
'springing kittens all over the place. In. all
,hapes and sizes and colours. But now
hey're a drag.. I can't even giye your
,ittens away anymore'. Everyone's got
,lenty. And I'm stuck with child support.
And don't tell me to get you fi xed. It's
oo late now. I figure you've run through
;bout all nine of your lives. It's been seven
'ears together,hasn't it, Pepper?
You're not at all like the cats .1 see on TV.
Gorgeous creatures in full long fur. What
. are you now? But some flabby, used-up
mother?

Now, now. None of that, Pepper. I know
you don't get that kind of TV cat food. Yon

And besides, what makes you think you
