If the committee planning the
new community centre for
Brussels, Morris and Grey and
members of several councils haVe
their way, there will be no
debentures issued for the
$600,000 building.
That was the feeling at the,
public information meeting called
by the new arena committee
Thursday night in the Legion.
"It just doesn't' make sense to
debenture. We'll have to get
people to loosen up their purse
strings," said Jim Prior, chair-
man of the committee. After'
,Wintario and Community Centre
grants are received, about
$237,500 of the cost of the new
building will have to be raised
locally, He said the committee
hopes to have a successful tender
by January .1 and to begin
construction "as soon as, the snow,
goes,"
Mr. Prior said every donation
attracts a tax benefit for the donor
and in addition Wintario will
either match or double the
donation, For example, he said, a
donation of $1,000 would be
matched by a Wintario grant of
either $2,000 or $3,000.

In contrast, he
said, over 20 years $2350. will

won't pay any grant on

No one would assure the
'meeting that there will be no
debentures if the fund raising
canvass leaves the committee
short of the required $237,500,
but committee members and
municipal councillors said they
weren't in favour of debenturing
any of the costs.
"I'm definitely not for debent-
uring but if we all get behind the
canvass and put it over the top,
we won't need to worry," said
Grey councillor Leona ArmStrong.
Deputy reeve of Morris, Jim
Mair, said debenturing would

There'll be at least 'one change
on Grey Township council this
year.
Barbara Dunbar, who's been a
councillor for two terms, has
announced that she's not running
again. "It's time somebody else
had a stab at it. 'I've been on for
four years, and that 'is enough,"
Grey reeve, Roy Williamson is
definitely running again. Mr.
Williamson is finishing his first
term as reeve but he has been a
member of council for six years,
including two years as deputy
reeve and two as a cpuncillor. Mr.
Williamson said he isn't sure yet
whether or not Grey will have' a
ratepayer's meeting.
Leona Armstrong, who is
finishing her first term as a Grey
councillor says she hasn't fully
committed herself yet. Although
she sometimes feels they get
The old Brussels arena, which
Ministry of Labour officials asked
Brussels council to close, is
staying open only because council
has assured the ministry that a
new arena is' going to be built.
That's what Reeve Jack
McCutcheon told about 40 people
at the information meeting on the
new arena on. Thursday night.
"The word in .the coffee shop is
`there's nothing wrong with the
old arena", 'Brussels resident
Jack Bryans had told the meeting.
Reeve McCutcheon said that
although experience in other
municipalities is that money for a
new building comes in much
faster if the old arena is closed,
Brussels council was trying to
keep the present arena operating
just for this inter. So far, he said
the ministry of labour seemed to
be allowing it• to stay open, as
long as they were assured that a
new arena is in the works.
The reeve asked the meeting
whether people would agree to
have council spend a minimum of
shortchanged because of all the
meeting she has to attend, her
family have agreed that she
should run again," I have, their
support", she said.
While- not deciding definitely,
"I probably will" run again, Mrs.
Armstrong said. She added that
she will miss Mrs. Dunbar on
council.
Grey's deputy reeve, Cliff
Bray, said that he is still
undecided about whether to stand
for re-election or not,
The Post was unable to contact
the other Grey councillor, Jack
Johnston, to ask whether or not
he plans to •run again.
Morris councillors, including
deputy reeve Jim Mair, " are

money, perhaps $1000., on the
old building open for this winter
only.. Most seemed to agree that
the old arena should stay open til
the new one is ready.
Brussels councillor Frank
Stretton, a member of the new
community centre , committee,
said it would, cost at least
$250,000 to bring the old building
up to present standards. A new
arena is estimated to cost
$600,000, about $237,500 of
which has to ,be raised locally.
"I'd compare it to an old car
you've had for a long time,"
Reeve McCutcheon said. "It's
given good service but you've
outgrown it and it's rusty. It
would cost more to repair it than
it's `worth."
Jim Prior, chairman of "the new
arena committee said that a
completely new site was picked
for the arena because it was
costing $300,000 in Belmont to
build a new arena on an old ice
surface. An engineer'g. report

In McKillop, things will
probably be much the same
after December. Most members
of council have indicated that they
are running again, and none had
heard of any other McKillop
residents planning to contest an
election.
McKillop reeve, Allan
Campbell, who has been on
council for 16 years said he 'will
stand again. "Nobody else seems
to want to. If somebody wanted
the job, I'd be willing to quit."
Deputy reeve, Ralph McNichol,
who has also been on council
since 1960, says he will likely run
again, although he couldn't be
definite yet.
Councillor Harvey Craig said
he is planning to run. 'He's been
on council for about seven years.
