Just because ' Mrs. Janet
McKay has .just had her 91st
birthday, that doesn't mean she's
given up all her interests.The
UNICEF
The Unied Nations Children's
Fund is well known for its
life-saving activities in the fields
of Child nutrition, mother and
child care, control of diseases and
disaster relief. But it is not
enough to, protect children from
disease or disaster, they must
also be protected from ignorance,
about 30 per cent of Unicef's
resources are allocated to the
fields of education and vocational
training. Every child needs the
right kind of schooling so that he
may grow up to become a
productive adult. With $1.00,
collected in a Hallowe'en box,
Unicef can buy a box of chalk so a
teacher can write lessons on the
blackboard.
The world's future depends on
Children. Unless they receive the
care and education they need,
they will not be able to grow into
useful productive adults. The
United Nations Children's Fund
helps the world's children with
aid to education. Just 6 cents in a
Unicef box buys an exercise book
so that a school child can take
notes and do homework. •

Not too soon
for Christmas
cake baking
It's not a bit too soon ,to st9.rt
your Christmas cake baking,
particularly if "youplan to
remember friends' and acquaint=
antes at Christmas time. Food
specialists at the Ontario Food
Council, Ministry of Agriculture
and Food, remind you that
' delicious homemade fruit cakes
from your kitchen can be among
the most appreciated presents
you give this holiday season. Just
pick your favorite Christmas cake
recipe, select the ingredients
from the presently well-stacked
shelves of your supermarket,
spend a few hours in the kitthen,
then store your baking properly
until giving time. You'll long b e
remembered as a talented and
most considerate friend.
When making Christmas cake,
it is generally not advisable to
double the recipe. You could bake
a recipe in smaller pans or cut it
into loaves or quarters once
baked, for giving away. You may
certainly substitute fruit ingred-,
lents, but always be sure the total
weight of fruit is the same as
originally called for in the recipe.
Baked cakes once removed from
the oven should be allowed to cool
and set. Once cooled, wrap them
carefully in aluminum foiL Store
in the refrigerator, or in a tin can
in a cool basement to allow the
cake to "mellow." About a week
before "giving" will be time
enough to devote special atten-
tion to decorating, selecting a
pretty container and gay wrap-
Ping to set it off.
Be the first
on your block
to be able to
run around it.
