WITH 24YEARS EXPERIENCE IN FURNITURE RESTORING
Duties begin in 1977
Mortis. appoin
a new clerk There are 16 herds of cattle
under quarantine for Brucellosis
in the County, Agriculture
Canada district veterinarian. Dr.
W. J. Thompson says. He says
that's about the same number as
last year but that new regulations
should decrease the incidence.
Dr. Thompson advised
livestock owners to have
additions to their herds blood
tested before they bring them
home, and again in 30 days.
Livestock dealers' premises
now must be registered with
Agriculture Canada in a further
step to control brucellosis in
Canadian cattle herds, Ariculture
Minister Eugene Whelen has
decided.
Livestock dealers are also
required to--keep records of the
movement of cattle on and off
their registered premises under
amendments to Agriculture
Canada's Animal Contagious

In all honesty, milk ha been
able to maintain its reputation as
a "nearly perfect food".
According to average Canadian
consumption, it's estimated that
dairy foods contribute 76% of the
total calcium consumed daily,
41% of the riboflavin, 24% of the
protein, and 12% of the vitamin
A. Therefore, their importance in
the diet cannot ..be ignored.
Canada's Food Guide
recommends 21/2 cups for
children up to about 11 years of
age, 4 cups for adolescents, 11/2
cups for adults and 4 cups for
pregnant and nursing mothers.
Anyone following these
recommendations satisfies many
of his or her nutrient needs.
The transformation of milk into
milk products has some effect on
• nutritive value. However, the
mandatory addition of vitamins A
and D to partially skimined and
skim milk in Canada now replaces
the lost vitamins. Evaporated
milk too; is now enriched with
vitamins A ; C and D. As for UHT
(Ultra High Teniperature) milk, it
compares favorably to
pasteurized milk in nutritive
value
Diseases Regulations which
became effective last month.
"Brucellosis is usually
introduced to a herd when an
infected animal is purchased. But
until now, many dealers did not
have records to provide
Agriculture Canada's`-Health of
Animals Branch with the name
and address of the seller so the
herd of origin could be
determined," Mr. Whelan said.
With the amendments, all
cattle eligible to be tested for
brucellosis Will require a negative
test within 30 days prior to being
brought to a dealer's registered
premises. These animals will be
identified by a Health of Animals
Branch eartag put on when the
blood samples are collected for
the test and before the animal
reaches the dealer's premises.
The livestock dealer's records
will identify each animal by
eartag. This will assist in any

dealer's premises. 4
Livestock dealers affected by
this change in regulations are
those who collect cattle on their
premises for resale. Brucellosis
testing at auction barns and
stockyards will continue under
the Health of Animals Branch
regular testing program.
In addition, a negative
brucellosis test within the
previous 30 days of cattle being
moved interprovincially can be
required under the amendments.
"We have been very concerned
that outbreaks of b rucellosis have
occurred as the result of cattle
being moved from one province to
another.This step should stop this
from happening again," Mr.
Whelan said.
"When brucellosis is identified
in a•herd, the Health of Animals
Branch conducts a thorough
epidemiological investigation.
These amendments are designed
to make the investigation easier
and to protect herd owners in
every way possible," Mr. Whelan
said.
Blood tests for brucellosis must
be done by a Health of Animals
Branch veterinarian, inspector, or ,
an accredited veterinarian.
Those cattle not requiring a test
are calves under six months of
age, spayed heifers, steers, or
female ' cattle which are
accompanied by a certificate
proving they were born within the
previous two years and were
vaccinated against brucellosis
between three and nine months of
age.
