Chevrolet's 1977 model line-up features
a new era of full-size passenger cars of
reduced size and weight. Available as a
two-door coupe, four-door sedan and
four-door station wagon, the all new.
Caprice, Impala and Bel Air constitute the
first totally new design in this new
generation of full-size cars.
In creating the crisp new styling of the
1977 full-size cars, designers were given
the task of reducing vehicle exterior
package size without sacrificing passenger
comfort and without any detraction in
character or content of the vehicle.
In comparison to the 1976 Chevrolet, the
new full-size Chevrolet is shorter in
wheelbase by 5% inches, with front and
rear overhang shOrter by 2'/2 inches and
overall length shorter by about 11 inches.
The very practical vehicle height is about
21/2 inches greater than , the current
Chevrolet. Front and rear. wheel treads-are
down about 3 incile.•
Despite the smaller package .size,
traditional big car roominess and comfort
have been Maintained. Inside, Caprice,
Impala, Bel Air sedans and coupes have
mo ire front and rear head room, more rear
leg room and more usable trunk capacity
than their '1976 counterparts. Emphasis
has been placed on overall structure to
maximize passenger comfort.
Occupant entry and exit is substantially
easier for these 1977 models because of the
new exterior design which features less
door glass curvature and a higher roof line
Seat height in the sedans has been
increased for improved comfort.
Other significatn changeg in the
Chevrolet lineup for 1977 are evident in the
styling of the compact Concours. The
Concours, now afritely appointed, luxury-
level compact vehicle, has undergone
attractive styling changes. A massive
appearing new grille provides the basis for
the distinctive Concours front appearance.
The Corvette program for 1977 is one of
refinements encompassing appearance,
convenience and performance for greater
owner satisfaction. Starting with exterior
appearance, the 1977 model can be
identified by new crossed-flags emblems
between the headlamps and on the fuel
filler door. The familiar "Stingray" front
fender nameplate has been discontinued to
give the car a cleaner appearance. For the
same reason, the air inlet grille at the rear
of the hood has been eliminated.
In the intermediate car lineup, • the
Chevelle model line for 1977 is strimmed
down to two series. A two-door coupe,
four-door sedan and a four-door station
wagon will be offered in both the Malibu
andMalibu Classic series.
Oldsmobiles
A new generation of family cars and
along list of engineering improvements
highlight Oldsmobile's 1977 lineup.
Oldsmobile is covering the market in five
distinct car lines — Omega, Cutlass,
Eighty-eight, Ninety-Eight and Toronado
— with 26 models, eight fewer than last
year.
New for 1977 are the Cutlass Supreme
Brougham colonnade hardtop sedan, Delta
88 pillar coupe, Delta 88 Royale pillar
coupe and Toronado XSR. Discontinued
are the Cutlass Supretne Cruiser, Cutlass
Salon sedan, Delta 88 hardtop coupe and
hardtop sedan, Delta 88 Royale hardtop
coupe and hardtop sedan and Toronado
Custom coupe. In addition, three Custom
Cruisers have been discontinued as
separate models, but are available as 1977
options. Toronado
Highlighting the 1977 Toronado are a
number of design changes, the new
Electronic Spark Timing, a special XSR
model and the 403-cubic-inch V-8 engine.
This front-drive personal luxury car .is
avilable in two coupe models — the
Brougham and XSR. They feature a new
hood, front end panel and a distinctive
grille with a rectangular pattern. New
horizontal parking lamps are mounted
beneath dual rectangular head lamps and
there are identifying lamps in the -nose of
the fender front end panels.
