Preparations for the 1978 International Plowing Match have been underway for some time. Although the Huron Inter- years distant, practically all the committees have been named and are busy with their plans. The 1978 match will be held on the Jim Armstrong farm a mile east of Wibgliam and on those of his nearer neighbors. One committee which has to make an early start is the group which takes charge of publicity and promotion, headed by Ray Scotchmer of Bayfield as chairman. Exposure to carbon monoxide, for one thing. According to one study skaters at many indoor rinks are exposed to levels of the gas well above safety standards set for the outside air.The problem is created by -gas-powered ice —national is still more than two resurfacing machines. The machines have poor, if any, pollution control devices. And ventilation is often inadequate or infrequent. Rinks, say the study, should undergo a complete air flushing after every resurfacing process. Electrically operated equipment would eliminate the carbon monoxide problem altogether. During the "closed door" winter months, the study also found that auto mechanics were exposed to dangerous levels of the gas. Sometimes garages have adequate ventilation apparatus but do not use it. Another finding was that auto commuters inhaled twice as much carbon monoxide as riders , on mass rail transit. What the researchers did not measure was the additional complication of tobacco smoking inside passenger cars.Smoking can cause carbon monoxide levels in closed cars to skyrocket. Public transit has a double advantage, since so many cities do not allow smoking in public transportation.
