Area Wedding New babe s protect consumers
New government regulations
covering the packaging and label-
ling of food products came into
effect in March 1976.
Packaging and , Labelling At
offers consumers peotectiosi
against fraud and deception in
packaging and labelling.
Under the regulations of this
act, the following infformation is
required on the Jebel:
1. Net quantity: This must be
declared in both Canadian and
metric units of measurement or
by numerical count; in some cases
metric measurements alone are
adequate.
2. Product identity: this may be
indicated by the common or
generic name of the product or a
description in terms of the
function of the product in both
English and French.
3. Name and address of the
manufacturer or distributor. One
benefit of the new system will be
a reduction in the ,variety and size
of packages. This, in itself, will be
a boon to food shoppers. In
addition, any label illustrations
must accurately describe the
contents. If a picture of a natural
product (such as lemon) is shown
to denote flavor of a product, and
artificial flavor Is added, then the
label must so state, The Act also
controls, to a certain extent, the
amount of empty space permitted
at the top of packages (slack fill).
In general, the new Act re-
quires that all labels be concise,
easy to locate, and simple to
understand so as to simplify
comparision shopping for
consumers.
