WE'RE COLD, .BUT WE WON Linda Smith, left and Mary Ellen. Knight
(wrapped in a blanket to keep warm) proudly wear the second place medals they
won in the- ladies canoe race at Thedford on Sunday. A number of Brussels
canoeists won prizes in what's pretty well the final canoe race this year in Western
Ontario. The 15 mile race, originally scheduled to end where the river runs into
Lake Huron, had to be cut short because of high winds and three foot waves coming
in off the lake. (Photo by Bremner)
SO of
der g'
man of.,
er
men's,
Last week was a holiday
week for the ' writer of this
column. With a family of six, and
for a few days seven, vacationing
with me it was a happy time. They'
enjoy, our beautiful 'Lake Huron
beaches and refused to leave the
house without grandma tagging
along. They also forbid her to do
any work for the few hours we
were at home so it was a restful
holiday spent visiting grandpa in
hospital and lazing in the sun on
the shores of Lake Huron. Such
good things come to an end. Now
comes .the time go get down to
regular routine again. Somehow,
after a week away, the old brain
refuses to function on schedule
after even one week away.
Keeping this in mind do„not be
too critical of what you read here.

We are warned that postal
rates, and telephone rates are
both about to increase. So to keep
in touch with absent family
members and friends is going to
pick our pockets again to increase
their profits. Hopefully the
advance • in postage will also,
increase the qualiity of service.
With some of us it will be the
grasping .tenacles of the giant
octopus B ell that will gobble up
Our dollars. We find it much more
convenient and satisfying to
communicate, in close personal
touch than on paper, no matter
how sweetly scented.

The Canada Cup series is on
the air this week. This will keep
hockey fans close to. their T.V.
sets to see how Canada's players,
with the best of the Canadian
hockey talent on the ice together
for the firsttiir.te; 'acquit
themselves. If they keep up the
display of pride and energy they
have shown in the pre-games it
will be a great series for wh 'ich
they will have no need for regret
if they do not come our in top
place.

This holiday weekend will
bring crowds of travellers on our
highways. Drivers of motor
vehicles will need to take extra
precautions to drive carefully if
they expect to • arrive at their
destination safely. Drive sensibly.
Do not become a statistic in the
report of thedead and injured in
the highway slaughter report.
A site has been chosen for the
new Brussels arena, according to
the Brussels Morris and Grey
Recreation Centre building
committee. .
A site offered by Jack Bryans,
that's to'tife southwest of a
housing development that's
planned in Grey Township land
that will be annexed by Brussels,
will be the location • for the new
arena, the committee decided at
their meeting Monday night.
The arena site is within the
village limits now, but there is no
-4.
road leading to it. Brussels clerk
Bill King said that the arena site
would require a new road and
services from the village. He said
he imagined that easements
would have to be sought from
area property owners to allow a
road to go through.
