Also among the top indexing boars with an index of 128, was a Landrace x Yorkshire crossbred from the herd of Donald Henry, Bluevale. Top indexing Landrace which was approved for the sale by the selection committee was from the herd of Martin Van Bilsen, Glencoe ' while .the highest indexing Duroc approved for' the sale was from 'the herd of Andy' Schertzer, Tecumseh. The Performance Index now_ being used at the Test Station evaluates the overall performance of each boar while on test and combines the important economic traits of backfat thickness, average' daily gain and feeci mission Jeffrey and Bradley Cook, fourteen and eleven year old sons of Arnold Cook, Belgrave, and the top indexing boar in the August group of 83 boars which completed test at the Ontario Swine Test Station, R.R.#2, New Hamburg. The top indexing boar was an outstanding Yorkshire with a high P - erforrance index of 13.4 which combined low backfat thickness of .48", high average daily gain on test of 2.15 pounds and very= low feed conversion of only 2.24 pounds feed per pound gain. Canadian Dairy Corn Agriculture Minister Eugene Whelan today announced that Kenneth G. Savage, director of Agriculture Canada's Dairy Division, has b een appointed interim chairman of the Canadian Dairy Commission. Ellard Powers, chairman of the Commission since 1973, is taking a temporary leave from his duties for medical reasons.. • Mr. Savage has been director of the agriculture department's dairy section since 1968. Prior to that, he was a dairy commissioner with the British Columbia Department of Agriculture. From 1951 to 1961, Mr. Savage was a dairy inspector in Vancouver. A native of Winnipeg, he received his l3.S.A„ degree (in dairy science and bacteriology) from' the University of Manitoba in 1948. After graduation he worked for dairy firms in Tillson- burg and London, Ont., and then returned to the University of Manitoba where he received his M.Sc. degree in 1951. "Mr. Savage ' has wide experience in the formulation and administration of dairy programs and policies. His knowledge of the Canadian dairy industry and his contacts with producers, manufacturers and government conversion into one composite - index. The average performance index of each group is always 100 and indices of individual boars can range from voer 140 down to below 50. Only those boars with a Satisfactory performance index and which are approved by a culling committee for physical soundness are -offered for sale at the monthly station tested boar sales held at the Test Station, R.R.#2, New Hamburg (4 miles west of New Dundee).
